November 30, 1945

• The Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” feature carried in most Sunday papers gave space Sunday to Fairfax’s Dr. R.L. Cundall’s experience while vaccinating a pig over 10 years ago. The feature was almost ancient history to Fairfax folks, for on August 9, 1935, the Forum printed this comment on the incident: “When a veterinarian vaccinates a pig it may not be news, but when a pig vaccinates a veterinarian, that ought to be material for the Ripley’s Believe It or Not feature. Anyway, Dr. R.L. Cundall feels he is immune from necro after an attempt to vaccinate a pig Tuesday which kicked and injected the needle into the doctor’s leg.” Dr. Cundall was ill for several weeks after the accident, but it must have been effective, for he hasn’t had necro since.

• Mrs. Shirley Holland of Sheridan, Missouri, has purchased Clark’s Beauty Shop in Fairfax from Mrs. Lois Clark Taylor, and will take possession of the business December 1. Miss Holland will retain as an operator Miss Margaret Dunkelberger, who has been with the shop since soon after it was established.

December 3, 1970

• A construction worker on I-29 who had only been on the job 45 minutes Tuesday died from an accident when a bucket from a crane fell some 30 feet, striking him in the face. The force of the fall literally split his face in half, causing extensive brain damage. He was taken to the Fairfax hospital and then on to Omaha, Nebraska, but died just shortly before reaching the hospital.

• A farm family from Atchison County will appear on WOW-TV, channel 6, in Omaha as the Farm Family of the Week, Friday, December 4, at 12:25. Mr. and Mrs. Don McCartney and children will be interviewed by Arnold Peterson, WOW Farm Director. The McCartney family farms 500 acres between Fairfax and Tarkio. It is a grain and livestock farm and Don has 100 head of calves this year. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCartney are active in the community and their church, serving on several boards, and the family participates in making candles.

• Over the Backfence by Nancy Gaines: “Congratulations to Betty Wennihan on being selected as ‘Citizen of the Year for 1995.’ Betty is active in her church, the Fairfax Kiwanis Club, and works at the beauty shop. Her school is also very dear to her heart and she works hard with the alumni.”

• Light Nite winners included: Burke & Sons Lumber – Grand Prize Winner; Walnut Shop – first place humorous; MU Lambda Sorority – first place traditional; Baptist Church – first place religious; and Exchange Bank of Fairfax – first place buildings.
