• Abell’s Produce purchased this week from Mrs. I.W. McIlnay the Tarkio Produce and Hatchery business operated for a number of years by the late Mr. McIlnay and will operate the hatchery business at its present location.
• A popcorn crib at the Manley, Inc. plant collapsed last Thursday night, 3,000 bushels of ear corn tumbling out at the east side. J.R. McNulty, who lives near the plant, stated that he had heard the crash at the Manley plant about 11:00 Thursday night.
• Newly redecorated, the Walnut Inn Coffee Shop and Bamboo Room will open tomorrow under the management of the new lessees, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Haun, at the Walnut Inn Hotel. Formerly known as the Cosmo Room, the Bamboo Room takes its name from its new wallpaper of bamboo tree design in green and soft brown. Paneling of native walnut in both the Bamboo Room and Coffee Shop has been polished and all flooring has been sanded and polished. The kitchen and pantries have been painted. New wallpaper was added to the coffee shop, which also boasts a new telephone. Persons wishing to make reservations may now call 329.

• A loss in excess of $30,000 resulted from a fire of undetermined origin late Friday night which destroyed the seven-room home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dalbey at 412 North 12th Street. A 1969 Dodge car, file containing Rev. Dalbey’s lifetime of writing and work toward the Ph.D., as well as garage and storage area of the structure were destroyed.
• The Missouri State Highway Patrol has a new plane, a Helio Super Courier Model H-295, which cost $63,000 and was paid for by federal funds under the Highway Safety Act Program. Trooper Gary B. Hayes, who flew helicopters in Vietnam before joining the patrol, will fly to Tarkio December 18 to demonstrate its use to officers.

• It’s been a long time coming, but a settlement with the previous Tarkio College auditors has finally been reached. Deloitte & Touche has agreed to pay Tarkio College six million dollars. On May 6, 1991, Tarkio College filed suit against Deloitte & Touche alleging fraud arising from the audits performed on student financial assistant programs. The suit was filed in Atchison County and later moved to U.S. District Court. That filing was later dismissed by Tarkio without prejudice. On May 17, 1991, Tarkio College filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy relief and Tarkio College ceased operations. On December 8, 1992, Tarkio College filed suit in Jackson County, Missouri, alleging, among other things, negligence arising from the audits performed on student financial assistance programs by Deloitte & Touche. The suit that was filed in Jackson County was set for trial, but, as a result of mediation and six million dollars, all claims were withdrawn by Tarkio College.
• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce Elf Auction raised $3,000 Sunday evening, December 10. Other activities that were to be held were postponed to the next weekend due to slick roads and below zero temperatures.
