• It was revealed at a meeting of the library board on Tuesday that during December there were 495 books and 105 magazines in circulation. Twenty-three patrons were added. The three most popular books were “Forever Amber,” “The Black Rose,” and “Cass Timberlane.”

• Ed Harding, “tarheel” humorist, will appear here Wednesday night, January 9, at Rankin Hall, presented as an artist course number of Tarkio College. From a casual talk or two to his North Carolina friends, Ed Harding has rocketed to international repuation as one of America’s finest jokester-philosophers. He has been compared to Bill Nye, Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and all the best America has produced, but his individuality of humor stamps him as unique.

January 7, 1971

• Stranded travelers along Highway 136 east of Tarkio took shelter at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald McEnaney and children Sunday and Monday. The group totaled 27 men, women, and children, all from Iowa with the exception of one Tarkio family. A 12-inch snowfall with the greatest density in 20 years of record keeping blanketed this section of the country Sunday and into Monday.  Combined with high winds, snow clearing is still going on due to the weight and hardness of the snow as well as sub zero temperatures.

• A group of 14 merchants, in cooperation with the Tarkio Theatre, is starting a public relations program called The Lucky Name Plan. Each week, every merchant listed on another page of this issue will mail five fully-paid tickets to people in this trade area with the tickets good for any member of the family and valid for any show for a 30-day period from date of issue. In the beginning, names will be selected from various directors and customer lists.

January 4, 1996

• Northwest Lodge #358 A.F. & A.M. is pleased to announce that Worshipful Master Rod Hall will present Richard A. Halliday with a 50-year pin on Sunday, January 7, 1996. Richard becomes the third 50-year member of Northwest Lodge #358. The others are J.W. Painter, Tarkio, and Carl B. Bezner, Santa Clara, California. One other, Claude A. Templeton, died in October.

• George Leishing and wife, Ann, parents of five children and grandparents of six, have accepted the position of pastors of the Full Gospel Community Church in Tarkio. George has been employed at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri, through Service Master as Director of Environmental Services since October 1, 1995, having moved to the area from Joplin, Missouri.
