• Dr. J. Merle Rife, a cousin to Dr. M. Earle Collins, is the subject of a feature article in a recent issue of the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch magazine. Dr. Rife has written a text book in beginning ancient Greek and is setting the type for the book himself. Because of the intricacies of the Greek alphabet, he has had to master a complicated linotype machine with a special font of Greek matrices. Dr. Rife is professor of classical languages at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio.

• Bill Klein and E.A. Austin have purchased the former Phillips “66” Service Station on Main Street and will make of it a Conoco Station. C. E. Munn, who has been occupying the building, is moving his office to the Johnson Motor Co.

January 14, 1971

• An adult farmers class will be held in the high school vocational ag classroom January 18. Mr. Bob Chapple, Atchison County Director of the Missouri University of Extension Center, Rock Port, will be the discussion speaker. His topic will be “Livestock Waste and Pollution Problems.”

• Gregg Prather, a Tarkio High School graduate, was selected high school principal for 1971-72 by the Tarkio Board of Education. He is currently superintendent of schools at Livingston County R-I School District. He is interested in and will be given serious consideration for the superintendency here at the end of the 1971-72 school term when Superintendent D.A. Ferguson completes his present contract.

• Scott Nelson was selected as Tarkio High School wrestling king and Missy Defenbaugh was chosen as queen for 1996.

• Melanie Otto, a 1988 graduate of Tarkio High School, and her husband, John, met President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Melanie’s husband, John is an Assistant Ceremonies Coordinator at the White House Military Office. Melanie’s parents are Mike and Sandra Marr of Westboro, Missouri.

• Purchasing new Christmas decorations for downtown Tarkio is the immediate goal of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce in 1996. A committee of Sam Nelson, Eric Livengood, Craig Livengood, and Doug Summa will meet soon to make plans for this project.
