• Representatives of the Peppard Seed Co. have been here this week carrying on operations to protect and save from possible overflow 1,700,000 pounds of popcorn stored in a large crib near the Hamburg depot. While the corn may not be in immediate danger, recent overflows in southwest Iowa caused by ice jams have aroused concern to its safety.
• Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kerr have repurchased their food market and are once again in possession of the store. Messrs. Robert Kydd and Ted Kessler of Kansas City who had recently purchased the market were unable to secure suitable housing here and decided to give up the store. The Kerrs decided to adopt the name the recent purchasers had given the market – the Ideal Food Store.
• Raymond W. Smith held an open house at his jewelry store Wednesday in observance of the 25th anniversary of his establishment in business in Rock Port.
January 14, 1971
• Missouri’s northwest counties currently are undergoing a pheasant boom, but a dark cloud threatens upland game within a year. The Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and the Extension Service of the Department of Agriculture are making a one year study of methods for eradicating marijuana. So far, all methods would destroy nearly all the cover for the birds. The birds need cover for nesting in summer and for protection from the elements in the winter.
• The Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department answered 49 alarms in 1970: 16 city alarms and 33 rural. Loss on these fires was $58,495. The fires consisted of six house fires, 20 grass fires, three furnace fires, eight car fires, two barn fires, one restaurant fire, two trailer home fires, two church fires, one garage fire, one tractor fire, one hotel fire, one rendering vat fire, and one combine fire.
• Snow, much of it, and that’s just what Rock Port had January 3, can be costly for everyone. City labor costs for snow removal were $540 with additional hired labor costs of $150 and trucking, including drivers, of $867.50. The city also had $200 repairs of equipment charged to the storm of January 3.

• The Rock Port Blue Jay wrestling squad won their own six-team tournament January 6. Clarinda finished second.
• Richard Fentiman was named the Rock Port Optimist of the Year. He is a charter member of the club and has been treasurer since it started. He has been active in all the civic and youth projects undertaken by the club.
• David Vette from the Webelos Den of Rock Port Cub Scout Pack 59 was the top seller of popcorn. He sold $1,161 worth of popcorn, earning many prizes.
