January 25, 1946

• Sometime between closing time Saturday night and daylight Sunday morning, the Kemerling Cafe in Fairfax was entered and robbed of about $72 in cash and two shotguns. Entrance was made through a window in the kitchen. The exit was made by turning the lock on the back door.

• In addition to colored slides showing labor saving devices at the farm machinery meeting to be held by the extension service, February 5, at the Memorial Building in Rock Port there will also be shown a technicolor moving picture on the building of the Alaskan highway. The action in this picture shows one of the outstanding achievements of the machine age and it will be of interest to every American.

• Donald Bowman, who recently was discharged from the army, has purchased 160 acres of land a mile north of Dotham, known as the Thomson farm, from George Stevenson of Tarkio. He will farm the place and 160 acres adjoining which belongs to his father, Jess Bowman.

January 28, 1971

• The Atchison County Library will service Fairfax with bookmobile visits every Friday morning until suitable quarters can be found to re-establish a permanent library here. The vehicle will be parked in front of Thiesfeld Dry Goods.

•  Miss Suzanne Davis and Roger Southard wed January 23. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Cecil Lackore at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bolton received New Year’s greetings from Mr. and Mrs. David Klinzman and Chris of Craighall, Johannesburg, South Africa. Mr. Klinzman was a math teacher and coach in Fairfax in 1964 and 1965 and Mrs. Klinzman “Marty” practiced teaching in the Fairfax home ec department.

• ServiceMaster Management Services, Downers Grove, Illinois, a full-service environmental management company, took over management of the maintenance and housekeeping and laundry services at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax.

• Friends of the Atchison County Library, a library support group, is no longer an active organization. Active members had numbered no more than five for the past several years and several offices and committee chairs had not been filled.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “I have wondered for years what the firemen would do if an alarm sounded when they were holding a benefit fish fry. Well Saturday night, the fish fry was about over when the mutual-aid alarm came for the Rock Port Hen House fire. The firemen left, with just a few remaining to finish the supper. Then, Fairfax friends of the fire department all pitched in to clean up so that when the tired firemen returned and opened the doors, a squeaky-clean room and fire station greeted them.”
