• Miss Catherine Rash of Rock Port was named “Miss Atchison County” after winning a beauty contest held at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port January 15. Runner-up was Miss Caroline Glo Smith of Tarkio. A picture of Miss Rash will be sent to MGM Studios in Hollywood where it will compete with photographs of other winners from Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas.

• Miss Elizabeth Stewart, communicator at the local airport, is the new leader of the Tarkio Girl Scouts and will be assisted by Mrs. Linnius Doughty and Mrs. H. H. Hayes. Margaret Andrews of Tarkio recently became a first class Scout, completing her requirements of that rank with a major field in nature and three minor fields.

January 28, 1971

• A new business opened this week in Tarkio. The U-Save Mart, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of a Sav-A-Stop Midwest, Inc., is located at 316 Main Street in a building which has been completely remodeled and decorated by owner Everett Cochran. Employed in the store are Mrs. Joe Craven, Mrs. Gary Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Pat Whitham.

• Avalanche publisher R.C. Henry, Fairfax Forum publisher Earle E. Sims, and Grant City Times-Tribune publisher Joseph C. Stocks made a trip to the new Missouri Beef Packers plant in Plainview, Texas.

• The Mule Barn Theatre is looking for a boy between the ages of seven and 12 for the upcoming production of “Summer Tree.” A Basic Stage and Theatre Lighting workshop is also being held for all interested parties.

• After a career of more than 36 years, George Barnett of Tarkio has retired from St. Joseph Light and Power Co. He started with the company in August 1959 and his last day was December 31, 1995. George has helped during football games at Tarkio High School for 37 years, as well as at the former Tarkio College.

• Hen House Restaurant/Rock Port Truck Plaza burned near the intersection of Highway 136 and I-29 in Rock Port, Missouri, Saturday evening, January 20, 1996. The building, which housed both the restaurant and truck stop, was a total loss in a fire which is believed to have been caused by an electrical wiring problem. Luckily, no injuries were reported and all customers and employees were safely evacuated. Seven area fire departments responded with 20 trucks and 50 men.

• The officers and directors of the Farmers & Valley Bank in Tarkio completed the transfer of ownership to FSC Bancshares, Inc. of Cameron, Missouri, on Wednesday, January 17.  The Farmers & Valley Bank received its state charter on April 19, 1933, after the Tarkio Valley Bank and Farmers Bank, both of Tarkio, completed a merger. The Tarkio Valley Bank was founded by R.M. Stevenson in 1881 and the president of the Farmers Bank was J.A. Postlewait when it opened its doors in 1907.
