January 25, 1946

• Gordon Clifton, who has been engaged in the work of a bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation the past three years, has quit the position and is now in Rock Port. He expects to take charge of a furniture store which his father, O.W. Clifton, will establish in Hamburg as soon as a new building can be erected.

• Several Rock Port citizens who had their radios tuned to the right station Saturday evening heard a former Rock Porter participate in the “Truth or Consequence” program. Frank Launder, Pasadena, California, failed to land the prize, however, by failing to identify the mysterious voice of a prominent American. Rock Porters appear to “get in” on California broadcasts as not long ago Mrs. August Husing was heard on one of the programs.

• George Chamberlain, Rock Port’s florist, lost a consignment of funeral flowers Wednesday morning when the luggage compartment of the bus in which they were being taken to Oregon caught fire and destroyed the shipment. Chamberlain got busy when advised of the loss and prepared a second lot for the Oregon customer.

January 28, 1971

• The Pony Express Council’s highest awards for outstanding service in the Boy Scout program were presented Sunday night to four adult volunteers, including Dean C. Curnutt of Rock Port. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest honor which can be bestowed by the council. Curnutt has served as Scoutmaster, Merit Badge Counselor, District Committee member, and Finance Drive chairman and for the past 14 years, institutional representative for his local Scout Troop. He also serves as a member of the council board of directors.

• Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hall of Rock Port will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary February 5. They were married February 5, 1901, in the Rock Port Baptist Church parsonage. The Halls made their home on a farm northwest of Rock Port during the first 60 years of their marriage and for the past 10 years their home has been at 507 S. Market Street in Rock Port. Charlie Hall is 96 years young and his wife is 92.

• The Coach House, operated by Ned Greenley, turned in a fire alarm at 2:00 January 27. A newly-installed 20-pound powder extinguisher that releases in extreme heat was activated, but failed to smother the fire. A 15-pound CO2 extinguisher deployed by Greenley also failed to put out the fire. Rock Port Fire Chief Darrell Greer stated a similar fire occurred on the same day one year ago at the Coach House.

January 25, 1996 

• The 1996 Basketball Homecoming Queen is Susan Batschelet and King is Mark Fohl. Crownbearers were Paige Lytle and Seth Showalter.

• An anniversary is coming up for a local couple who have spent many years in this community. Walter and Eunice Mulvania will celebrate their 51st anniversary on January 31.
