February 22, 1946

• Ed and Ray Noah from down on the Missouri River were in Rock Port Monday with a quantity of catfish. Included in the catch was a 50-pound fish which looked as big as a fair-sized calf and made mighty good eating.

• Orville Chambers, who owns one of the best dairy herds in the community, is selling off his cows, together with his farming equipment, some household furniture and other things.

• At the present time, no less than 11 new houses are either in the process of being erected, are ready to be started, or plans have been announced for their construction.

February 25, 1971

• PFC Wayne E. Shandy arrived in Hansen, Okinawa, February 5. He will be stationed there for 12 months where he is in the company office. Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shandy.

• The third big snow storm of the winter struck Atchison County February 21, and dropped another six inches of the white stuff. High winds and some freezing rain complicated removal and made all county roads nearly impassable. Snow storms have left us with over 26 inches of snow.

• Tim Scott and Jeff Copeland, both of Rock Port, had quite a scare February 19 on their way to Hamburg, Iowa, to attend a basketball game. The men were driving along in Tim’s Pinto when they realized the highway had disappeared and they were traveling through about a foot of water. Force of the floodwaters pouring over the highway carried the Pinto off into a water-filled drainage ditch on the east side of the road. The boys tried to open the car doors to escape, but the water quickly filled the auto and the doors would not open so they escaped through the windows. Luckily, the water was only chest-deep, but was pretty cold and filled with floating ice. Neither boy sustained injuries. The Nishna River overflowed Friday as a result of a huge ice jam. However, there were no barricades, warning signals or signs on the highway declaring the road closed due to floodwaters.

February 22, 1996

• Marjorie Bublitz and Dee Wade were crowned “Valentine Sweethearts” at Pleasant View’s Valentine’s Day activities. All enjoyed “Kick-the-Can” ice cream cookies, and punch.

• The Rock Port Senior Citizens Nutrition Site hosted its annual Valentine’s Day celebration and crowning of royalty. The 1996 Valentine’s Day Queen was Elizabeth Wintjen and the King was Fitzugh Diggs. The escorts were Zella and Leroy Davis. The crownbearers were Lorraine Moore and Alfred Vette.
