March 29, 1946

• A new modern food store, the Supply Store, opened today in the completely remodeled and redecorated Loren Coe building at Fourth and Main. The store is one of 28 stores owned by Hyde and Vredenburg, Inc., of Chariton, Iowa. A complete line of groceries, meats, and fresh vegetables will be carried.

• Nearly 500 students representing 20 high schools from Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa competed in 25 music and nine speech events in the Tri-State Music and Speech Festival held at Tarkio College March 22.

• Real estate transactions: John Cain has purchased from O.E. Ellsworth the residence property at 1010 Chestnut. Mr. and Mrs. Don Wall have bought the 10th Street property belonging to Walter Bowers and moved there this week. Virgil Traub has purchased from Wilbur Buster the residence at 907 Broad Street. Mr. and Mrs. Buster will move two miles north of Tarkio on Hwy. 59.

April 1, 1971

• In the First National’s Teller Tells, it reads: “One of the interesting collections in the Mule Barn gallery is an array of containers of spices, cooking ingredients, crackers, coffee, etc. loaned to the museum by Viola Craigmile. There is also an old time flour bin and an ancient kitchen cabinet. It is planned to bring into existence an old-fashioned kitchen completely furnished with early Atchison County heirlooms.

• With flowers busting out all over, the Business and Professional Women’s League turned wishing for spring into a reality on the stage at the Community Building Monday and Tuesday nights when they presented the annual style show and home mart.Field’s Clothing, Clardy’s Store, Pat’s Bath Shop, and Tarkio High School Home Economic girls showed off the newest styles while several local businesses set up booths.

• Roger Bryan was selected as elementary principal at the March meeting of the Tarkio R-I Board of Education. He is presently elementary principal in Princeton, Missouri.

March 28, 1996

• In Editorials: “The condemned building at the corner of 4th and Main streets in Tarkio is causing more problems this week. After having a structural engineer determine that there were two walls rather one common wall between the condemned building and the Red Door, Red Door owners felt more comfortable about staying open. However, a crack was discovered on the wall of the Red Door, apparently being caused from pressure of the leaning condemned building, so the business closed until the situation can be rectified.

• There will be a benefit Saturday, March 30, for the athletic weight room at Tarkio High School. A cook-out will kick things off, followed by a basketball game with KQTV All-Stars vs. some local “stars.” A sports auction will take place at halftime of the game.
