March 29, 1946

• Two car loads of basketball enthusiasts from Rock Port saw part of the games in the intercollegiate tournament at Kansas City last Friday evening and got a kick out of watching Oklahoma’s 7-foot Bob Kurkland drop counters into the basket.

• Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mahon have sold their new and modern home on West Mill Street to E.R. Peck for the occupancy of the latter’s son, who is to become one of Rock Port’s newest residents. The Mahons acquired the property from Corporal Cohen when they bought the Rock Port Market.

• Just to see whether the firemen would quit a dinner to respond to an alarm, the fire siren was sounded Tuesday evening while the firemen were having a fish dinner at the Central Cafe. The smoke-eaters piled out of the cafe and hustled to the station to discover they had responded to a false alarm, given by a member of the department to see if they were “on their toes.”

April 1, 1971

• Mrs. Arthur Lister will soon open an antique shop in her home at 409 West Calhoun Street in Rock Port. Mrs. Lister will carry a general line of antiques for the beginner as well as for the advanced collector. The shop will be known as The Patio Antique Shop.

• A combination of good, dry weather and people anxious to clear fields and garden plots plus a considerable amount of wind caused the Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department a very hectic week. A grass fire got out of hand along the bluff west of Deering Scamman. There was no property damage. A grass fire was reported in the Country Club addition behind the Paul Tiemeyer home. It apparently started from trash burning in the incinerator. There was no property damage. A grass fire engulfed the entire bluff area of the Delbert Hudson farm west of High Creek. The fire swept over several acres, but the firemen were able to keep the fire away from the residence. A grass fire on the Harrison Bailey farm northwest of Phelps City along the Burlington-Northern railroad right-of-way had the firemen out there two different times. Had the fire not been brought under control when it was, the whole town of Phelps City would have been threatened.

March 28, 1996

• The Rock Port FFA Chapter held its 23rd annual barbecue Thursday, March 7. Approximately 300 members, parents, and guests enjoyed the meal.

• The Rock Port High School Band led the way as they marched in St. Joseph Saturday, March 16, for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The band was featured on KQ2 news. Along with the band were the twirlers marching right behind the mayor. The band sounded excellent as they played “El Vencedor” and “Louie, Louie.”
