April 12, 1946

• Mrs. Roberta Obert has purchased from Ray Moore and Frank Cooper the Standard Service Station located at the corner where Highway 4 meets Highway 59 on Tenth Street. The station has been operated by W.L. Flesner and will now be operated by Mrs. Obert.

• As Donald Hoskins, photographer and WWII veteran of Huron, South Dakota, was flying from Georgia to Huron last Saturday, the motor of his monocoupe plane quit. He made a forced landing in a plowed field nine miles north and four miles west of Tarkio on the John Wessler place. Although he was uninjured, he suffered an estimated $2,000 loss through damage done to the plane.

April 15, 1971

• Tarkio High School graduate Rebecca Middleton has brought the joy of religious music to the public through a new album, “Rebecca Sings…” Rebecca is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Smith of Tarkio and Burlington Junction, Missouri. On this album, Rebecca not only sings, but also furnishes her own accompaniment on her favorite instrument, the cordovox, an electronic instrument that is a full Lowry organ played with accordion keys. Rebecca and her husband, ordained minister and evangelist Loyd Middleton, travel all over the United States in evangelistic crusade work.

• Billy Egbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Egbert, is putting the finishing touches on his Kool Kart racer in anticipation of the summer racing season. Billy, with advice from his father, service manager with H.H. Wright Motors in Tarkio, and upholstery assistance from his mother, has named his racer 85, the same as his father’s stock car racer.

• Deputy Sheriff Wayne Templeton attended the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy for two weeks in March, where he ranked eighth in the class of 38.

April 11, 1996

• Tarkio eighth grader Nate Defenbaugh set a new junior high school record in the high jump at the Warriors’ first track meet of the 1996 campaign. Defenbaugh cleared 6 feet to take first place honors and set a new junior high record, as well as tie the current high school record at Tarkio.

• A new $100 bill has been released, incorporating enhanced security features to protect against advancing technology that could be used for counterfeiting. Ben Franklin’s portrait is larger and placed off-center. Color-shifting green-to-black inks will be hard to copy, as well as microprinting and circles-within-circles patterns. A security thread is embedded in the paper and a watermark that bears the same likeness as the portrait is also added to the right side of each bill.

• Mayor Vilas Jones, City Treasurer Hazel Buckley, and Councilpersons Cathryn Craig and Inace Freeman took their oaths of office at the Tarkio City Council meeting Wednesday, April 3. The city decided to advertise for bids to demolish the building on the corner of Main and Fourth streets.
