• Leading all other Missouri counties in the production of corn, Atchison County’s average over an 11-year period from 1922 to 1943 was 4,399,600 bushels, according to a recent report on Missouri corn production released by the Missouri Department of Resources and Development.

• Will Whited of Tarkio has purchased the Frank McNulty property in northwest Fairfax and he and Mrs. Whited will move to the place soon. Mr. Whited is now employed at the Shineman Barber Shop.

• FBI agents from Kansas City have been making a “check” of this area this week for the notorious Earl J. McFarland, convicted murderer of an 18-year-old female government employee. McFarland escaped April 3 from the Death Row of the District of Columbia Jail in Washington and it was thought that he was one of two strangers who were in Fairfax last Friday. McFarland was identified by the bus station ticket agent and a customer in Fairfax as having come in with a man who asked about the cost of a ticket to Vancouver, Washington. They got the information and left, saying they’d be back, but never came back. During their time in town, one of them got into Ira Dunlap’s car and attempted to start it. Ira caught the man and asked what he was doing in his car. The man said he thought it was his cousin’s car and apologized and left. McFarland is thought to have still had on the clothing taken from the prison guard during his escape because the flap on one of his hip pockets contained the letters O.S.C, the initials of one of the guards.

• The Dairy Diner is advertising a malt and shake sale – 19¢ for all flavors – Thursday and Friday, April 15 and 16.

• Mr. and Mrs. Neal Judy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at their home on Easter Sunday, April 11. They were married April 14, 1921, in Oregon, Missouri. Except for three years living in Holt County, they have resided at their family home three miles south of Fairfax.

April 11, 1996

• The annual Atchison County Soil and Water Conservation poster contest was held March 13 at the Memorial Building in Rock Port. Fairfax overall winners were: Bethany Graves, third grade, first place; Lacy Moore, fourth grade, second place; and A.J. Martin, third grade, third place. Bethany also placed third overall out of all county winners.

• The Fairfax City Park was the place of the annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday morning. Over 80 children were there to participate. All kinds of cookies and candy were provided and the Easter bunny (Miss Fairfax 1995) passed out plastic eggs with prizes in them.
