April 19, 1946

• Saturday, April 20, will mark the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Strader of Rock Port, who were married on that date in 1886. They came to Rock Port in 1913, when Mr. Strader established a barbershop here.

• There appears in this issue a statement by Pete Hedgpeth calling attention to the financial difficulties which confront the Rock Port, Langdon, & Northern railway company, which has been serving the town for 57 years. Hedgpeth, general manager of the railroad, is promising to make good his retirement from the management on May 1st, as he says he has served his time and is willing for someone else to take over the burden.

• Arrangements have been made with the athletic department of the University of Missouri for the screening of pictures of the Cotton Bowl football game, played in Dallas, Texas, on January 1, at the regular weekly meeting of the Rotary Club April 25. Other 1945 Tiger games will also be shown. The public is invited to drop in and see the pictures, which should be of special interest here as local man, Hardin Cox, participated in the game as a member of the Tiger squad.

April 22, 1971

• Rock Creek flooding problems and solutions are presented by the Corps of Engineers in this issue of the Atchison County Mail. In order that all the citizens may express their views, a straw ballot is provided. Options on the ballot are: For the big dam north of Rock Creek; For the two little dams on Boney Branch; For channel improvement; For levee improvement; and Don’t give a darn either way.

• Rock Port’s Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a free pancake and sausage fry and a sidewalk sale in conjunction with customer-farmer appreciation day Saturday, April 24.

• Rock Port Telephone Company is sending out $56,000 to original right holders in the old Rock Port Mutual Telephone Company. Approximately 500 checks were sent out to individuals who owned 780 rights at the time the new Rock Port Telephone Corporation took over.

April 18, 1996

• An open house will be held for Oscar and Georgia Million’s 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, April 28, 1996, at the Tarkio Community Building. The couple was married on May 3, 1936, in Rock Port and have resided in northwest Missouri their entire married life.

• The Rock Port Ministerial Alliance and Rock Port Cablevision are pleased to announce that the Faith & Values Channel has been added to the lineup of channels offered in the basic package on Rock Port Cablevision.

• April 18 marks the 65th anniversary of the day Walter Mulvania was notified that he had passed his bar exams. Walter returned to Rock Port in the summer of 1931 after his graduation and began practicing alongside of L.D. Ramsay who was one of several leading attorneys in the area at that time. They shared an office in the back of the old Bank of Atchison County building. Walter came back to enter the law practice at the depths of the Depression. Times were hard for everyone and in fact, Walter said that at that time he could have made more money digging ditches than as a lawyer.
