April 26, 1946

• When the girls of Marshall Hall, women’s dormitory at the college, returned from Easter vacation they found 80 new single Hollywood beds, complete with box springs and inner spring mattresses, to replace all old beds that had been in use. The new furniture was ordered through Davis Furniture store.

• Students are to meet at Tarkio High School Wednesday, May 1, in readiness for the school’s first Field Day. At a secret location, the students will have baseball, volleyball, and horseshoe games.

• A P-61 pursuit plane, traveling over Tarkio, dropped two gasoline tanks, doubtlessly by accident, near the J.B. Shaum and Leland White residences. One of the 150-gallon tanks exploded when it hit the curb at the south of the Shaum residence then flew into the air about 75 feet. Although serious damage could have resulted, the damage was only slight and after seeing what happened, the pilot did not land, but resumed his course.

April 29, 1971

• Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Mulvania of Westboro, Missouri, purchased a new 7020 John Deere tractor and eight bottom plow. This is the largest four-wheel drive tractor manufactured by the John Deere Co. and Mrs. Mulvania indicated she will operate it part of the time.

• Homer Marl Couch of Omaha saw his luck end in Atchison County this week simply because he had been drinking. Couch was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Atchison County with his breathalizer test showing .17 alcohol. Troopers were astonished when he confessed that he had not had a driver’s license in 26 years. The troopers also discovered that Couch was wanted in Dutchess County, New York, on a charge of carrying concealed weapons and for a parole violation. He posted bond for the DWI charge and the citation for having no driver’s license, but was turned over to an FBI agent from Kansas City on the charges in New York State.

• The effort of several months proved successful Sunday afternoon at Whitehead Speedway in Nebraska City for four area men. A stock car driven by Larry Poppa won the “B” Feature Race at the track. The racer is powered with a 390 cu. in. Ford Motor in a ‘64 body and was built by Poppa, Jack Millsap (the other driver), and pitmen Richard Howell, and Richard Muntz.

• Harriett Wilcox of Tarkio has been elected Volunteer of the Year by the Atchison County Committee of OATS, Inc.

• The Tarkio fifth grade students performed a musical play entitled “The Adventures of Lewis and Clark” on Tuesday, April 16, 1996. The students performed “The Ballad of Lewis and Clark” “Let’s Make a Deal,” “Life’s Ruff!,” “This is our Home,” “Fork in the Road,” “Wayfarin’ Stranger,” “Tumblin’ Waters,” and “O! The Joy!”
