April 26, 1946

• S.J. Peterson, who purchased the residence known as the Mrs. Rose Hedrick place, has a house moving crew moving the residence this week to a lot east of the W.B. Seymour place. The lot on which the house stood belongs to the school district and it, together with the adjoining land, is soon to be graded and made into a school athletic field.

• Jack Pearce has his Oldsmobile back and it does not appear to have been damaged. The car was stolen from near his home April 11. Except for a few minor accessories taken from it, the car seems to be about as good as before it was stolen.

• Jack Combs has told The Forum that the person who got into the Ira Dunlap car the day Earl McFarland, the hunted murderer was reportedly in Fairfax, was none other than his cousin, J.O. Combs. Jack had given J.O. permission to drive his car to Rock Port. The Dunlap and Combs cars are the same model and appear very similar, so the incident was only a mistake.

April 29, 1971

• The home of Mrs. Janet Watkins, registered nurse at the Fairfax Community Hospital, was destroyed by fire Monday night. She lives on the Goldenrod highway between Tarkio and Hamburg, Iowa. While no one was home when the fire broke out, it was thought to have been caused by lightning.

• Open try-outs for the musical comedy “Mame” will be held May 6 and 7 at the Mule Barn in Tarkio. The play, which will be presented June 2 through 13, has a large cast of actors, singers, dancers, and orchestral musicians.

• The Legislative Conservation Award was presented to Rep. Hardin Cox of Rock Port at the state convention of the Missouri Conservation Federation in Jefferson City on April 17.

April 25, 1996

• Darlene Smith’s Cafe on Main Street in Fairfax sold this week to an employee, Connie Dunkle, and her husband, Randy. They took over ownership of the cafe on Monday, April 22. The name of the cafe will be “The Day Break Cafe.” Darlene Smith started her career in the food service business in 1942 when she went to work for Goldia Stepp at the present location of The Day Break Cafe and has worked there ever since.

• The Fairfax junior and senior prom was held Saturday night. The theme was “The Secret Garden.” Carrie Bradfield was crowned Prom Queen and Chris Bartlett was crowned Prom King.

• The Fairfax High School is celebrating its 100th high school graduation this year and alumni have been asked to submit stories about the “old days” to spur interest in attending the alumni banquet.
