May 3, 1946

• After 41 years in “railroading” F.R. Elton retired this week and his duties as agent at the C.B. & Q. station in Tarkio were taken over by R.H. Harvey May 1. For the past 33 years, Elton has been at the local depot, having come here from Hamburg, Iowa, where he was agent, in December of 1913. He recalls the “heydays” of business at the station many years ago when livestock, the Molasses Feed Company, and the Midland Manufacturing Company kept the “Burlington” busy. R.H. Harvey can also remember the railroad business in Tarkio as it was in years past because he was here as an operator 24 years ago.

• Miss Josephine Jackson, a graduate of Tarkio College in the class of 1935, is now back in the states after two years in England and Germany as program director for the American Red Cross.

May 6, 1971

• This week’s featured C.O.E. student is Richard Brought. Richard is employed as a grocery clerk at the local Hy-Vee Super Market. He spends about 22 hours a week receiving training in inventory control, stocking, ordering, displaying, register operation, and general clerk duties. Richard is also enrolled in English IV and geography.

• Tarkio College will hold its 85th annual commencement on Sunday, May 9, in Schechter Auditorium. Baccalaureate degrees will be conferred on 150 students and honorary degrees will be presented to Mr. Hugh Sidey, Washington, D.C., Rev. John Skelly, Topeka, Kansas, and Rev. Kenneth Carey, Niles, Michigan. Mr. Sidey is the chief of the Washington news bureau of Time-Life and will deliver the commencement address.

• Charles Wright of Tarkio has raised a number of trees which he will donate for free to people who will come and get them out of the ground to replace trees destroyed by disease or storms in Tarkio. Trees available are hard maple, black walnut, and red bud.

May 2, 1996

• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce and City of Tarkio are teaming up to sponsor a City-Wide Clean-Up in Tarkio. Everyone is encouraged to do their part! Besides a trash pick-up and tree-limb drop-off, clean-up plans include having flowers planted, windows washed, trees trimed, and grass pulled from sidewalks on Main Street.

• The Tarkio High School juniors and seniors are preparing for their “Keeper of the Stars” Prom at the Community Building May 4. The After Prom Bash will take place following the prom at Heartland Rec Center.
