Two people were seriously injured and a classic car extensively damaged in a two-vehicle accident in Atchison County at 6:40 a.m. Friday morning, May 28, 2021, on U.S. Highway 136, about a quarter-mile west of Rock Port.

A westbound 2015 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 26-year-old Dalton Hart of Tarkio, attempted to turn left into a private driveway and drove into the path of an eastbound 1938 Chevy Deluxe PC, driven by 50-year-old Kenneth Holmes of Auburn, Nebraska. The Chevy Deluxe began to skid and the two vehicles struck head-on. Hart’s vehicle came to rest on its wheels facing south in the roadway, while the Holmes vehicle came to rest on its wheels in the roadway facing north.

Holmes was taken by Atchison-Holt Ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax and later transferred by air ambulance to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. A passenger, 44-year-old Stephanie Holmes, also of Auburn, was also transported by Atchison-Holt Ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax and then later transferred by ambulance to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. Both vehicles received extensive damage. The 2015 Ram pickup was driven from the scene into a parking lot and the 1938 Chevrolet Deluxe PC was towed by Double M Towing of Rock Port.

The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. M.R. Heits, who was assisted by the Rock Port Fire Department, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office.
