June 14, 1946

• Several from this vicinity are expecting to be in Kansas City June 25 to hear an address by Dale Carnegie, noted speaker and writer. Mr. and Mrs. Broermann, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Browning and Mr. and Mrs Albert Rolf plan to attend the meeting, to be held at the Hotel Continental. Joe Causino of South Side YMCA in St. Louis will speak on “The Youth of Tomorrow.”

• Tarkio Girl Scouts are back home from a fun week at camp in Topeka, Kansas. The girls made bracelets of woven plastic strips, braided lanyards, and leather billfolds and purses, as well as totem pole dolls. The girls also participated in a water carnival and several Tarkio girls came out with honors. There was also archery competitions, a “cleanest tent” contest, Queen of the Indians contest, singing, and horseback riding.

• Major James Alfred Angel, a former Tarkio resident who distinguished himself in overseas service during World War II, was killed June 5 in an airplane crash at Langley Field, Virginia. He had just been transferred from Tampa, Florida, where he had been stationed for the last two years. After cadet training, he was sent with the first air group to go overseas to the Pacific theater. He served as a squadron commander in several major operations, including the Philippine campaigns.

June 17, 1971

• Miss Patricia Ann Currie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Currie of Tarkio, became the bride of Warren Dean Rolofson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rolofson of Red Oak, Iowa, in a double-ring ceremony June 5 at the First Christian Church in Tarkio. The bride wore a floor-length Empire gown fashioned of imported silk organza styled with stand-up collar and Camelot sleeves trimmed in Alencon lace with white satin ribbon trim.

• Tarkio Community Betterment members were informed that the tree planting committee has planted 58 trees.

• “Luv,” the hilarious Broadway comedy by Murray Schisgal, will be presented this week at the Mule Barn Theatre in Tarkio. The director of “Luv” is Mr. Joseph Guastaferro of Fredonia, New York, and is this season’s guest director.

June 13, 1996

• Mr. and Mrs. Duane Clement of Tarkio and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Staten of Ravenwood, Missouri, announced the approaching marriage of their children, Lori and Mark, July 20 at the First Baptist Church, Tarkio.

• A URA/MRCA Rodeo was held in Tarkio Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8. Local riders included: Tifani Beason of Tarkio in Breakaway Roping; Jerry Espey, Dave Beason, and Matt Wennihan, all of Tarkio, in Team Roping; and John Currie of Tarkio in Bull Riding. John Currie rode his bull successfully and earned a score of 69.

• Good friends in the country or in neighboring towns became even more of an asset as Tarkio residents were without water for nearly two entire days. Many Tarkio residents were seen leaving town so they could take a shower! Friday’s rain also seemed to be a blessing as it allowed people to catch just enough rain water to “flush and brush.” Two major leaks were found in the main water trunk line that runs from the trunk to the water tower earlier this spring.
