• Vane Harmon, who lives on and operates the Keith Boettner farm, has been a patient at the Brown General Hospital in Nebraska City following a run-in with a hog. He and his helper were trying to handle an 800-pound hog when the rope being used broke and the hog dashed against Harmon, throwing him across a hog trough and causing him to suffer five fractured ribs and several bruises.

• Bob Crabtree, one of the youngest golfers who plays the local city park course, shattered the course record by shooting a score of 29 on nine holes last Thursday evening. Par for the course is 32. So far as known, only one other golfer has shot as low a score since the local course was established some years ago.

• Rev. and Mrs. LeRoy Crocker have been advised by one of their sons, Robert Crocker, who is with the U.S.S. Thetis Bay, presently stationed at Tacoma, Washington, that he has volunteered for service in the atomic bomb tests to be made soon in an isolated place in the Pacific.

June 17, 1971

• S/Sgt. Steven Sheldon spent the past five weeks visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Sheldon, Rock Port. He left June 5 for Travis AFB in California where he then traveled to Thailand for a year’s duty.

• Rock Port has been having trouble with the notorious “Boney Branch” since almost the beginning of settlers here and the founding of the town. The latest project is to construct a new double box culvert 12’ by 11’, 156’ long. Cost of the project, including resurfacing Main Street, is $250,000.

June 13, 1996

• Petty Officer 1st Class Jason M. Smith, a 1982 graduate of Tarkio High School, has completed a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean and Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. The carrier completed nearly 45,000 miles in the deployment, with 1,600 missions flown from the ship while in the Persian Gulf to enforce the international no-fly zone over southern Iraq. In all, more than 18,000 flight hours were logged and more than 7,500 aircraft landings were completed. The deployment was USS Nimitz’s first with an integrated crew of men and women. The ship produced more than 65 million gallons of water for cooking, showering, and supplying the steam driven catapults and propulsion plant – enough water to supply the average American household for 600 years.

• The headliner for the next Brownville Concert Series is Jay McShann, who is credited with helping to invent the blues-tinged “Kansas City” sound and is perhaps most often recognized as having given a young saxophone player named Charlie Parker his big break.
