• Professor L.M. Rowland, after 25 years of splendid service to Tarkio College, has presented his resignation to the members of the board of directors for them to act upon. Well-recognized in the field of science, Prof. Rowland (and his late wife) came to Tarkio in 1921 from New England. He has given his students in the biology department the kind of training that not many have the privilege to receive. Important medical colleges and universities have been impressed with his ability and have asked for “more men trained by Professor Rowland.”
• The Tarkio Lumber Company now has coal on hand and because of the coal shortage, is asking that people buy their coal now and have it put in their bins. This will enable the company to make room for more shipments of coal which they expect to be getting. If they have to cancel coal orders now because of no storage room, there would be a risk of not getting delivery on coal orders in the winter.
• The Federal Public Housing Authority has informed Tarkio College President Dr. M. Earle Collins that 20 family housing units have been assigned to Tarkio College for veteran housing. The allocation will enable the institution to provide adequately for an expected 1946-47 enrollment of 250 students.

• The “Spirit of ’76” prevailed in Fairfax last week when 23 young people met the challenge of that many sponsors to effect a charitable benevolence on behalf of the Fairfax Community Hospital. St. John’s Lutheran Church Luther League group members left St. John’s on foot at 7:30 a.m. June 18 and walked 16 miles. They reached their destination at the hospital at 5:15 p.m.

• Dawn and Randell Thornton of Fairfax, Missouri, recently purchased the Big T Motel in Tarkio. The hotel was formerly owned by Kristie and Randy Poppa. The Thorntons took over the business June 1.
• Ten students from five schools run by Youth Services International will soon be learning to fly at Kansas State University at Salina thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Youth Outreach Foundation. The week-long aviation program covers all the basics of flight. The purpose is to solo a student within seven days and students who successfully pass the course receive college credit. Three students will be representing Tarkio Academy – Dave Harris, Roberto Sanchez, and Felix Torres.
• Mr. John A. “Jack” Schmidt has accepted the principalship of the middle school in Tarkio next year. He is currently enrolled at the University of Mississippi completing work for a Ph.D. in Entomology. Mrs. Schmidt (Doris Ann) is to be the English instructor for 7th and 8th next year. She is currently enrolled at the University of Mississippi completing requirements for her Master’s Degree. Doris Ann received her high school diploma at Tarkio High School and her BA at Tarkio College.
• Dr. Don Stafford, Science Consultant from East Central State College, Ada, Oklahoma, is teaching a class in the Junior High Science Institute held at Tarkio College. Junior high science teachers are attending the institute to help in implementing student-centered, inquiry oriented, science programs in their schools.
