June 21, 1946
• Two boys about 16 years old, who escaped from the state hospital in Glenwood, Iowa, were taken in charge by Marshal Catron and Constable Peters Sunday at Skellytown, south of Fairfax. The boys said they made most of the 75 miles from Glenwood on foot and were worn out and hungry.
• Selective service headquarters has issued a call for 14 men from Atchison County to report on June 24, but the call for the most part will have to go unfilled for the reason that only three or four men are eligible under the present draft regulations. Men eligible now are from the 20 through 29 age group, who are non-fathers, and who have not previously served in the armed forces. Men physically fit in this classification are few.
• Arthur Lindstrom leaves Tuesday of next week for New York City, where he will attend the Julliard School of Music for the next six weeks and do work on his master’s degree. He will make the trip by air.
• Some 150 St. Joseph men were in Fairfax Wednesday afternoon advertising their Pony Express rodeo to be held in September.

• While most dads were pleased to have one or two of their offspring remember to call or send a card on Father’s Day, Ford Burke was remembered by 65 members of his clan. The occasion also celebrated the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Burke. All of their seven children were on hand for a basket dinner.
• An open house at the local post office July 1 will mark the inauguration of the new United States Postal Service. Visitors will be treated to refreshments, a tour of the postal facilities, and guests will receive a souvenir envelope imprinted with the old and new insignia of the postal service.
• At the Fairfax Garden Club’s second annual flower show June 16, exhibitors entered over 125 arrangements and single specimens in competition. Mrs. Alfred Clark of Tarkio earned top honors for the best flower of the show, a delphinium, and Mrs. Don Maris of Fairfax had the best arrangement. Mrs. Ben Bywater of Tarkio earned the most blue ribbons and Robbie Hawkins received the most blue ribbons in the junior class.

• The Fairfax City Council accepted the resignation of Carolyn Doleshal, city clerk, who will be going to work for the United States Postal Service. The council hired Mindy Graves as the new city clerk.
• Fifteen Fairfax students and history teacher Kurt Dickkut flew to Paris, France, last Wednesday, where they will sightsee until their plane heads home June 20. Enjoying the sights are Jarod Graves, Patty Heitman, Trudy Heitman, Zac Smith, Josh Oswald, Brooke Osburn, Ryan Osburn, Matt Smith, Megan Smith, Julie Hunter, Amber Oswald, Amy Brown, Melanie Hall, Tony Sly, Lori Mills, and Mr. Dickkut.
