June 28, 1946

• Three people were injured last Wednesday evening, two business buildings on the main street of Corning were completely destroyed, and another building so badly damaged it may have to be razed, when a falling brick wall struck an adjoining wall, toppled it, and the process kept on. The middle building was occupied by the Garth Wickiser family and Mrs. Wickiser and family were in the building when it collapsed. Mrs. Wickiser and her younger son, age 4, were able to get out, but the other boy, age 6, was pinned in the debris and had to be taken out.

• Construction work was scheduled to start this week on grandstands for the Bilby Bros. Rodeo, which will be held this summer at the John S. Bilby farm, 12 miles east of Fairfax on Highway 46. Seating will accommodate 3,800 people. They received a shipment of 13 head of Brama bulls and steers from San Antonio and some Mexican cattle and expect to receive a shipment of wild horses from the western ranges.

• Fifty-five steel grain bins with capacities ranging from 2,014 to 2,730 bushels each, belonging to the Commodity Credit Corporation, were sold at auction at the Dan Martin farm east of Fairfax Monday at an average price of $160.

• Crawford and Simmons have purchased the blacksmith shop building, equipment and stock of the late Harry Hewitt from Mrs. Bertha Hewitt, executrix of the estate. They will operate the shop if they can employ a competent blacksmith.

July 1, 1971

• Greg and Jeanie Hawkins learned during a recent visit from their great uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Berry, that Mrs. Berry’s nephew is none other than Johnny Deutchendorf (AKA John Denver). John Denver is going to the top now with his great song “Take Me Home Country Roads.”

• The 1971 Fairfax Fair was declared an unqualified success as the event closed with a record crowd Saturday night. Roseann Cooper was named Miss Fairfax. Little Mr. and Miss Fairfax were Bobby Graves and Chris Schooler. Winners of the parade included: Youngest Parade Entry – Tony Musch; Oldest Parade Entry – Tom Miller; and Most Unusual Costume – Donovan Freemyer.

• Richard and Anna Mae Kemerling will observe their 63rd anniversary June 29.
