After working in a leaky garage a few decades past its prime and too small for all equipment, the Tarkio Street Department crew finally has a new place to call home. The new facility, built by Morton Buildings, at the corner of Elm and 5th streets in Tarkio, has enough room for all of the city’s equipment, tools, ice melt, etc. to be stored and kept safe and dry, as well as an air-conditioned/heated office with kitchen and bathroom that allows the guys to clean up and cool off or heat up during working hours. The total construction project costs (which will also include cement being poured in front of the garage bay doors) is $212,000. Not only is this amount well under the budget, but the city will have the entire cost paid off in a year or two thanks to smart budgeting efforts over the years.
