• (National News) A bunch of purebred Guernsey calves are the first group to be shipped to a distant point by air. They took off from Teterboro, New York, bound for Bogota, Columbia. The trip will take two days, instead of the 52 required by sea. Cattle transported by sea have taken six months to a year to recover from the rigors of a sea voyage. The result of the air trip is being watched by agricultural experts as well as air specialists.

• A letter from the Central American Mission has been received by Miss Grace Finch acknowledging the offering sent by children of the primary department of the Union Vacation Bible School. The gift has been assigned to the San Antonio school, a little school located about 35 miles from Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America.

• The long talked about athletic field opposite the school building has become a reality with a remarkable face-lifting treatment within the past weeks. Workmen have been busy clearing the block-wide tract of trees and brush and some sidewalks. Bulldozers leveled the entire block. The work was accomplished without great cost to the school district, but through the generosity of a few individuals who donated the use of machinery, fuel, and manpower.

July 8, 1971

• A group of 4-Hers from Atchison County and their chaperones traveled to Washington, D.C. where they joined other 4-Hers from northwest Missouri and attended a week-long course at the capitol. The group returned July 5.

• A Fairfax girl has been chosen one of the varsity cheerleaders at Missouri Western College in St. Joseph. She is Miss Judy Schooler and is one of two new cheerleaders selected. Another Fairfax girl, Deanna Bolton, was cheerleader last year and reigned as homecoming queen.

• An abundance of trees and shrubs adds to the beauty of the landscape at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Crawford, which has been selected as “Lawn of the Month for July. Fairfax Garden Club sponsors the monthly designation.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Been to Tarkio this week? Allow 30 minutes extra time. The Highway Dept. is working on the road and you have to wait. I waited 30 minutes and read the paper. The woman in front of me lasted 20 minutes then pulled out of line, made a u-turn and headed back to town.” “Thought for the day . . . Appreciation makes people feel more important than almost anything you can give them.”

• Officers of Community Hospital Auxiliary presented a check for $4,981 to hospital administrator Larry Goodloe on behalf of the Auxiliary for the purchase of a blood pressure monitor machine and a crash cart emergency IVAC machine.
