July 5, 1946

• Mrs. Mary Warneke, the community’s oldest woman, observed her 91st birthday Friday, June 28, by having dinner guests at the Warneke home just east of Rock Port. Mrs. Warneke is in excellent health for a woman of her advanced years. One of her chief interests aside from her home is her membership in the Eastern Star Lodge, at which she is a regular attendant, as well as the Kensington dinners given regularly by the lodge.

• At the height of the recent war, The Mail’s overseas first-class mailing of this newspaper to service men numbered about 300. It is a source of satisfaction to know that practically all of these subscribers are now back home, as shown by the July 1st correction of our mailing list, which left only 11 men on the first-class list.

• Rock Port’s baseball team, which plays on the diamond at the Dr. Ray Matkin country home, won a game from Fairfax last Sunday by the score of 9 to 3.

July 1, 1971

• George Holecek, Brownville, who works at Cox Brothers Hide Plant, snagged a 8 1/2 pound spoonbill in the Nemaha River June 7. Local fishermen around the area couldn’t remember ever catching a spoonbill in the Nemaha before.

• Mr. and Mrs. Tony McKenney, Rock Port, have been selected by the Atchison County Co-op Association to attend a Co-op Young Farmers Conference in Kansas City. The conference site will be Farmland Industries School.

• The Westboro Fire Department answered a fire alarm Sunday, June 27, which destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Roach of near Westboro. All household and personal items were destroyed, but the barn and garage were saved. Their son, Johnny Oldham, discovered the south side of the house in a blaze and kicked a door open and escaped from the north bedroom.

• William and Mae Siddens will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 29 at Bennington Auto in Rock Port. Also celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary are Mr. and Mrs. E. Ross Janes of Rock Port. They were married June 30, 1946, at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port by Rev. D.L. McConnell.

• During the recent annual session of the Missouri West Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dr. Wallace and Dianna Carpenter were recognized for their mission work. They received the Robert and Martha Marble Award. The Carpenters were chosen for their continuing work in Falmouth, Jamaica.

• The second annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering will take place at Star Hill Prairie Art Center. This year’s Arts That Tamed The Prairie Series will bring a chip carver, a basket maker, a chair caner, a doll maker, a pottery maker, and a blacksmith/knife maker.
