The Tarkio Library Summer Reading 5 & 6 year old group took the theme of Tails and Tales to a new level by including heads, too. The Atchison County Library’s 2021 Summer Reading Program started Tuesday, June 22. Thanks to Children’s Coordinator Otto Brandenburg, and volunteers Bev Christians, Mackenzie Dougherty, Tiffanie Gaines, Elizabeth Knierim, Jayne Martin, Whitney Schebaum, Brooke Walton, Sarah Osburn, and Michelle Oswald, it was a great first week.
This year’s theme is Tails and Tales. Readings included: Dog’s Colorful Day: A Messy Story About Colors and Counting by Emma Dodd, Owl Bat, Bat Owl by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick, Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel, From Tadpole To Frog by Shannon Zemlicka, Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming, Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw, and Blue Chicken by Deborah Freedman. Each group also participated in activities related to the stories and/or theme.
On Thursday, Bev read Owney, The Mail Pouch Pooch by Mona Kerby. Bev’s group also made origami bookmarks with creative dog heads. Mackenzie focused on a young fruit bat that loses her mother with the book Stellaluna by Jannell Cannon and a monkey in Grumpy Monkey Up All Night by Suzanne Lang. The group designed animal shaped alphabet letters. In Tarkio, Jayne had a hippo day by sharing Hippos Are Huge by Jonathan London. The group made masks and had a balloon race. At Fairfax, Sarah’s group read Three Billy Goats Gruff by Jerry Pinkney and re-enacted the story with the kids playing different characters. They painted glow-in-the dark firefly jars and also read Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. Michelle read a chapter of the classic children’s book Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. The group also made origami bookmarks and shared shared facts concerning how animals adapt to their environment.
