• Taxi service is now available in Tarkio. The new “Tarkio Cab” business is operated by Klell Ferguson, who has his stand at the Linwood Hotel. In addition to local trips, he will make long distance trips if desired.

• In an effort to guard against infantile paralysis in the city of Shenandoah, Iowa, Shenandoah Mayor E.G. Anderson has issued an order last Thursday that all weeds in the city be cut in preparation for the extensive spraying of DDT to kill mosquitoes and flies.

• Tonight the ladies of St. John’s Lutheran Church will serve 130 Tarkio Chamber of Commerce members and families at the church.

• Mrs. Hub Woolsey has purchased the residence property owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Lon Paris. She will move from her country home and take possession of the house September 1.

July 29, 1971

• Lt. Col. Frederick H. Niedermeyer was recently named chief of the Chapparal Special Items Management Office at the Army Command upon his transfer from the Army Safeguard Systems Command near Huntsville, Alabama. Chapparal is an air defense guided missile now deployed with troops overseas.

• Jack Harbin, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Harbin, took first place in bareback riding and calf roping at the Hopkins Junior Rodeo held there last Saturday and Sunday. Joe Harbin took first place in Steer Riding and first with Rod Curren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Curren, in the Calf Scramble.

• The Girl Scouts of the Atchison County Neighborhood, Midland, Empire Council (Tarkio, Fairfax, St. John’s, Westboro, and Rock Port) will hold their annual day camp, Camp Walnut, on Polsons’ bluff west of Rock Port August 2-6.

July 25, 1996

• Wildcat Days went on despite the rain and mud, which made the event a grueling, but hilarious exercise. First place was won by Imogene Grain. Oly took second and Irvine Farms finished third.

• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce has been awarded $2,500 in fiscal year 1997 as part of the Arts as a Basic Program, with funds to be used towards an ethnographic study of the school and community. Another grant was awarded to the chamber from the Missouri Arts Council for $2,400 to be used to support the Chamber’s Cultural Development Committee’s arts program. Funds will be used for the Community Christmas Concert. This year’s event will include an art exhibit featuring local artists and Tarkio Academy student artists. Funds were also allocated to help fund the recent AmericaFest Concert.

• Tarkio’s new head football coach, Tony Napierala, has taken over the job held by legendary football coach Dave Palmeiro after his retirement last year. Tony has started his new position by offering a football camp.
