August 2, 1946

• When the mechanical ditch digger, which is operating in the south part of town making a sewer ditch, opened an excavation on one of the sloping hillside streets, it encountered springs. This is rather unusual when one considers the elevation of the location. 

• Wakefield Hall brought to The Mail office Monday morning two stalks of corn which measure 13 1/2 feet in length. They came from the farm of his brother-in-law, Floyd Showalter, who lives six miles southeast of Fairfax. If this is a sample of the sort of corn Atchison County is growing this year (and every stand indicates it) farmers will have to use shotguns to cut down the ears come harvest time.

• Making way for the new bridge which is to be constructed this summer, the old bridge across Cow Branch at the Box Elder Ranch on No. 275 between Rock Port and Tarkio was removed early this week and traffic is now using the detour through the John C. Stapel farm. The loose character of the dirt is making it difficult for heavy trucks to negotiate the detour and at least one heavily-loaded stock truck got stuck and had to have some of the cattle transferred to another vehicle.

• How much more will Rock Port residents and local business establishments have to pay for postal services this year than last? An estimate, based upon their expenditures in prior years, shows that they will have to fork up an additional $109,000 in the next 12 months. The added cost, which comes to about 21 percent, will result from rate increases put into effect by the newly-constituted U.S. Postal Service.

• A $5,000 donation from the Goppert Foundation will enable the Rock Port Blue Jay football team to have a new dressing room to compliment the new football field and bleachers now under construction. The school was going to have to forgo the facilities because of the costs of the field and bleachers, but now, with the donation, the building will be ready for the first game.

July 25, 1996 

• Folks, get out your nickels, dimes, and dollars because Rock Port merchants are preparing for their Big Annual Sidewalk Sale. This Saturday, July 27, during regular business hours, there will be tables and racks full of great bargains!

• On Saturday, July 27, the Atchison County Fair Parade “Past and Present” will be held. Our county’s first fair was organized in 1867 and was held in Tarkio for several years after 1883. The fair was then returned to Rock Port in 1896.

• A small gathering of men watched the “Sewer Rat” video camera be put down a manhole on Summit Drive.
