• The carnival grounds and city parks were sprayed this week with DDT, as were many privately owned lawns throughout Tarkio, in an effort to do away with insects causing infantile paralysis.
• Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gifford have purchased the home of the late Mrs. Emma J. Downer. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Steck intend to move from this home to their newly purchased residence, the house formerly owned by Mrs. Fern Pierson of Shenandoah, Iowa, and occupied by the Giffords.
• A memorial service paying tribute to the Atchison County men who gave their lives in World War II will be held at Rock Port on Victory Day, August 14, first anniversary of the end of the war. All legion posts of the county are in charge of the program, during which Gold Star citations will be made.
• The Rev. E.E. Basye, pastor of the Methodist Church at Ackley, Iowa, and former pastor of the church at Westboro, sailed Sunday, July 28, from Newport News, Virginia, for Danzig, Poland. The Reverend and another man are supervisors of 80 cattlemen, who are caring for the horses during the voyage. The young minister is sailing to Europe in cooperation with the program of the Church of the Brethren to bring relief to the war-torn counties and thus promote brotherhood in the world.

• Recent visitors to the Queen Mary at her berth in the port of Long Beach were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Moore and children, Debbie, Diana, and Jackie, of Tarkio. The former Cunard liner is now open seven days a week for preview tours. Restaurants, shops, convention facilities, and Capt. Jacques Cousteau’s living sea exhibits will open late this fall.
• The Board of Directors of the Honey Tree Nursery School have employed Mrs. Eulah Fraser of Fairfax. She comes to the school after teaching and being retired from the Fairfax Elementary School.

• A benefit golf tournament held at Tarkio Golf Course raised $500 for a new roof on the shower house at Tarkio’s new swimming pool.
• T & L Body Shop, owned and operated by Lance Lansdown of Watson, Missouri, has recently moved to a new location at 300 East Highway 136 in Rock Port, across from the ASCS office. Lance has added a new paint mixing machine and will sell paint to customers if they want to paint their automobiles themselves.
• Diana Koeberl, Carie Lesher, Nicole Vette, Noelle Jagger, and Katherine Strauch, members of the Tarkio High School Flag Corps, attended the Marching Auxiliaries Flag Camp at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville July 15-18. The girls learned flag techniques and new routines. They earned several superior ribbons and all-star ribbons during the camp and at the end, were presented with a grand champion plaque.
• Action gets underway this Friday, August 2, for the 11 and Under C.A.B.A. World Series. This year’s tournament features 24 teams, the most ever to participate in the event in Tarkio’s 11 years of hosting it.
