August 9, 1946

• During Wednesday night’s heavy windstorm, a tree was blown down at the John Ridgeway place on Water Street and fell on the porch and house, doing quite a bit of damage.

• Rock Port radio listeners who were tuned in to Omaha last Sunday doubtless heard the voice of a friend, Jimmie Cawley, who as president of a junior chamber of commerce, gave a talk and then announced other numbers on the broadcast.

• House movers made a quick job last Friday of moving the Barger house from North Main Street to a new location in Sickler’s Addition. The house was bought from Tom Rash some months ago by Arnold Garst. The house was put on trucks, hauled out onto No. 275 and in record time had been taken the several blocks to its new location.

• Two young fellows on motorcycles were in Rock Port last Friday morning and attracted a lot of attention, not because they were wearing heavy leather helmets on the unusually hot day, but because one of them had a small monkey sitting on his shoulder holding on for dear life as he rode up the street.

August 5, 1971

• Larry Chapple was voted, by the players, coaches, and managers, as the most valuable player in the 4th District Legion Baseball league. He finished third highest average batting with a .353 and stole 52 bases. His record in league play is 14 runs, 24 hits, 5 walks, two base hits, one triple, one home run, 12 runs batted in, five errors, and five strikeouts. Larry was also chosen for the All-Star Team, along with Steve Bargman.

• No checks will be accepted for fines or court costs in Magistrate Court and none will be accepted by Sheriff Paul Seymour. Those coming to court are warned that they should carry a sufficient amount of cash to pay a possible fine if found guilty or be prepared to spend time in jail until such fine and costs are paid by cash.

• Mrs. John Sillers, Rock Port, was the winner of the sewing machine given away by D & R Fabric Shop during their anniversary sale which was held July 16-24.

August 1, 1996

• The Rock Port Marching Auxiliaries attended camp at NWMSU. The twirlers came home with the grand champion plaque. Fourteen girls received All-American recognition, which qualifies them for participation in the Citrus or Hula Bowl. They are: drum majorette – Jamie Schmielau; twirlers – Kymm Gayler, Jennifer Umbarger, Cindi Gayler, Crystal Taylor, Haley Haynes, Tawni Gebhards, Taya Moore, Amy Van Meter, and Stefanie Dalrymple; and flag corps – Katie Schmielau, Amy Zimmerman, Kate Griffin, and Terra Robison.

• Abie Showalter, Craig, Missouri, local auctioneer, was chosen as the 1996 Atchison County Fair Parade Grand Marshal. Abie has been a long-time supporter of the fair, volunteering as auctioneer for every livestock auction since they began in 1966, except one.
