August 9, 1946

• July was a record month for the Murphy Hog Yards, who reported a run of 6,034 head of hogs during the month. During June, more than 4,000 head of hogs were purchased.

• Because of the polio threat this year, the 4-H members of Atchison County will not attend the 4-H camp in Louisville, Nebraska. The county extension agent and 4-H leaders voted to cancel the trip when they met Saturday for their Achievement Day program.

• While 20 family housing units are on their way by rail to Tarkio from Ogden, Utah, workmen and Supervisor Mr. House of the Patti Construction Company of Kansas City are at work on the project that will take 45 days to complete for student veterans of Tarkio College and their families. If no unforseen delays arise, the first house, a two-family unit, will be ready for occupancy in 30 days. Bill Devaney of the college, a senior, World War II veteran and one-time prisoner of war in Germany, has been employed as time-keeper.

August 12, 1971

• A book of poems has been sent to the library here by the poet, Dale Duckworth, Auburn, California, a recognized poet who is a former resident of the area between Tarkio and Fairfax. The highly coveted title of “poet laureate” was conferred upon him in 1952. He has written some 13,000 poems to date.

• Tarkio schools open Wednesday, August 25. Classes will begin at 8:30 a.m., 10 minutes earlier than last year. High school plans dismissal at 3:15 p.m., the elementary school at 3:10 p.m., and middle school at 3:20 p.m.

• At U Save Mart, 316 Main Street, Tarkio: “Your School Supply Headquarters – 16 Crayolas, 19¢; Big Chief pencil tablet, 21¢; punchless binder (holds paper with or without holes), 33¢; 100 count wide or narrow rule notebook filler paper, 21¢; Bic pens, 27¢; and loose leaf zipper case, 19¢.

• The First Annual Men’s Best Ball Golf Tournament at the Tarkio Course Saturday and Sunday was very successful despite a very rainy first day. There were 40 teams entered. Winners were: Championship Flight – Lammle and Lammle, Peru, 139; “A” Flight – (after a play-off for first) – McIntosh and Marti, Tarkio, 149; “B” Flight – Voitenko and Davis, Shenandoah, 148; and “C” Flight – Hudson and Mullins, Sidney, 166.

August 8, 1996

• The Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Tarkio, in conjunction with the “Our New Pool” committee and the City of Tarkio, is selling chances to see who will be the first to go down the slide at the new Tarkio Pool.

• Duke Nuckolls of Westboro, Missouri, scored a hole-in-one on number 8 at the golf course in Tarkio on Monday evening, July 29. Duke said that he didn’t even want to play the last two holes, but after some persuading from his son and Gary Peregrine, he decided to play the last two holes. Thanks to them, he made that hole-in-one!
