The Loess Hills District Cub Scout Day Camp was held Thursday, July 22, through Saturday, July 24, at Mozingo Youth Camp in Maryville, Missouri. This year’s theme was Weird Wacky Science. Eight different packs from around the district attended this year’s camp.

Thursday evening, July 22, activities included making catapults, paper airplane catapults, balloon powered cars, and hiking. The catapult and paper airplane station was led by Cammy Ungles, high school science teacher at Mound City R-2. The campfire program was a hit as each den put on a skit for the audience. The Mic-O-Say Tribe came and danced around the campfire for the Cub Scouts as well.

Friday evening, July 23, was family night. Activities were water rockets and forensics by Maryville Public Safety. A cookout was held for the Cub Scouts and their family members. The pool was also rented for everyone to enjoy a free swim, and scouts got to work on some swimming adventures for their rank.

Saturday, July 24, activities were fishing, 72’ water slide, BB guns, slingshots, archery, and building a robot. A special program was also held after lunch by the “Mad Scientist,” also known as Amanda Griffin, “Mound City’s own Mad Scientist,” assisted by her son, Boy Scout Jadon Griffin. The “Mad Scientist” was definitely the wow factor for the young scouts with her awesome performance.

“We couldn’t have had a successful day camp without the amazing volunteer staff, leaders, and parents,” said Sarah Husing, Camp Director, and Brian Stephenson, Program Director. “We also had Troop 88, Troop 74, and Troop 190 scouts help the station leaders with the activity stations also.”
