August 23, 1946
• Robert W. McMullen, former Tarkio resident, will soon go to the Orient to live. As supervisor of meteorologists for Pan-American airways, he will have as his territory Tokyo to Calcutta.
• Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Geist have moved to their newly-built property at 906 Chestnut Street. Mr. and Mrs. Geist plan eventually to build a larger home and to convert their present home into a garage.
• Edgar Powell and Clarence Cooper are opening a Standard Service Station at the junction of Highways 4 and 59. In addition to the Standard Oil products, they will feature a small line of groceries and will have a lunch counter.
• Halberta Giants of the Elberta peach strain are on display at the Avalanche office and are constantly amazing the persons who “drop in.” They are samples of peaches on the Alfred McNulty farm west of Tarkio. The largest of the peaches on display at the office measures 11 inches in circumference and weighs three-quarters of a pound.
August 27, 1971
• Girls were awarded caps as recognition of their hours of volunteer services at Fairfax Community Hospital in a candlelighting ceremony held Friday night at the United Presbyterian Church in Fairfax. Honorees included Kay Hawkins, Jayne Sly, Brenda Stewart, Mary Ellen Davis, Susan Grossman, Judi Polson, Alice Bradfield, Kathy Wensel, Gayle Seymour, Sheila Cooper, Canna Sue Graves, Cindy Postlewait, Linda Lockhart, Debbie Kotsores, Rita Martin, and Karmen Vette.
• Mr. and Mrs. Jim Jeter of Bedford, Iowa, have assumed operation of the Pantorium which they purchased from Mrs. Jack McMillan. The Jeters purchased a residence at 1005 College from C. Clifford Smith.
• No summons was issued when Charles E. Harbin, 53, of Fairfax struck a black angus steer owned by Sam Irvine of Tarkio when he was traveling south on Route N eight miles southeast of Tarkio.
August 22, 1996
• The Tarkio R-I Board of Education held its annual tax rate hearing on Monday, August 19. The board voted to set the 1996-97 levy at $2.98. This levy is 25¢ less than last year’s levy. The levy is less because of increased enrollment, Westboro students, and Missouri students at Tarkio Academy who reside in the district.
• The Tarkio Community Garden Club will host its 36th annual Flower Show August 27 at the Farmers and Valley Bank. The theme is “Summer Fling.”
• According to the Tarkio Golf Board, all Tarkio residents can now pay green fees to use the golf course for the remainder of the 1996 golfing season. This can be done by teeing off before 12:00 noon Monday through Friday.
