• A new Heartometer, one of the newest types of heart diagnostic units, has been installed at the office of Dr. C.L. Barnard. The machine was purchased from the Cameron Heartometer company of Chicago, Illinois.
• Registration for the 63rd year of Tarkio College will begin Tuesday, September 3. Classes will start Thursday with the opening chapel service at 11 a.m. to be led by Rev. Frank Black of Omaha, Nebraska. He recently returned from service as a chaplain in the armed forces.
• Mr. and Mrs. Donald Whited are the new managers of the Walnut Inn Coffee Shop, M.F. Patterson, owner of the hotel, announced this week. Only a week ago, Mr. Whited was discharged from the U.S. Army, having spent two years in the South Pacific.
• John Marshall Stevenson was chosen by the board of directors of the Farmers and Valley Bank to succeed the late George J. Stevenson as president of the bank. John has been connected with the bank since the date of its organization, having been a member of the board since that time, and prior to that was a stockholder and director of the Tarkio Valley Bank.

• An antique sale and flea market for the benefit of the Mule Barn Museum will be held at the Tarkio Community Building September 11. A lunch booth will be operated by the Jolly Green Homemakers Club.
• Miss Melanie Coe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ryland Coe of Tarkio, was selected winner of the queen class at the Pickering Centennial Western Horse Show held August 19 in Pickering, Missouri. Melanie received a trophy and a $25 savings bond. Melanie was also selected as winner of the queen class at the Hopkins Saddle Club’s Annual Horse Show in Hopkins, Missouri.
• Ground breaking ceremonies for the new structure of the First Baptist Church in Tarkio will be held at the site at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Members of the congregation will gather to observe the start of the new facility.

• Cynthia Pederson of Tarkio has written an informative article that appears in the September 1996 issue of Highlights for Children. In “A Book As Simple As ABC,” readers learn about a hornbook. The one-page book from long ago – which often contained the alphabet, the Lord’s Prayer, and some syllables – was shaped like a paddle and covered with a horn from a cow, sheep, or goat.
• The United Methodist Church presented a check to the Slemp family of Tarkio, who lost their home and belongings in a house fire last spring.
• Residents of Tarkio will have an unprecedented opportunity to meet each other and develop new friendships on Wednesday, September 4, when the Flower Mill hosts “Good Neighbor Day.” The Flower Mill will hand out 1,000 roses in bunches of six absolutely free. Free games and activities will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. that evening in Tarkio’s South City Park. A concert will follow.
• A Jeep owned by Brent Livengood was stolen from 602 College Street in Tarkio and recovered in Jackson, Wyoming. A suspect is being held in Idaho Falls, Idaho, awaiting extradition.
