August 30, 1946

• At a meeting of the Fairfax board of aldermen Monday night, it was voted to cancel the order for street oiling this year. The Land Construction Company of St. Joseph was supposed to oil the streets and finish the job by July 1st, but have been delaying the work. The board feels it’s now too late in the season to be sure of getting a satisfactory job.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Carlisle of Tarkio have leased the Rinehart Cafe from Clyde Rinehart for a period of six months, starting September 1st.

• Two boys who escaped from the Iowa school for boys in Glenwood were caught here Tuesday night and spent the night in the calaboose before being returned to the school Wednesday morning. One of the boys had escaped from the institution last spring and was also captured in Fairfax.

September 2, 1971

• New faces at Fairfax R-3 include: Mrs. Erma Collins – teaching full-time in remedial math; James Holtz – first year teaching in jr. high science and high school biology, physical science, and chemistry; Harold Cornelius – new social studies teacher and bus driver; Donna Portis – first year at Fairfax teaching fourth grade; and Bradley Mathers – new music instructor at Fairfax, teaching vocal and instrumental music.

• Atchison County showed a total of 946 farms in the 1969 census of agriculture. In the last census of agriculture (1964), the number of farms in the county was 869. The average farm size in the county was 386.4 acres and an average value of these farms (land and buildings) was $121,651.

• Harold Gomel and Danny Deatz are co-captains of the 1971 Bulldogs football team. The team will be playing their games with the assistance of a new, all-electric scoreboard keeping track of the points with the numbers being tallied by the volunteers working in the new press box.

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Thought for the day . . . the world has too many cranks and not enough self-starters.” “Since I took pictures of the ‘fairy ring,’ I have heard from many other people in and around Fairfax who had one at their home. The World Book says they appear after warm rains and we certainly have had plenty of those showers lately.”

• Fairfax R-3 opened last Wednesday morning with one more student enrolled than last year for a total of 236. New teachers this year include Sarah Gaines, Tammy Kisker, Wendy Riley, and Shelly Twitchell. Also new to the school staff is Vernon Rhoades, a bus driver.
