New businesses recognized at the Atchison County Development Corporation’s annual meeting included Linda Kimpston (Massage Therapy), Paul Seaman (Chef Paul Presents), Justin Pankau (Just In Time Promotions, LLC), John Teal, and Troy Haayes (Northwest Missouri Land Title Company. Other new businesses were recognized, but representatives were not present at the meeting.

Youth Beautification Grants were awarded to Fairfax 6th Grade Guidance Class (represented by student Tyler Duering and Counselor Marisa Hedlund) and the Tarkio High School FCCLA Chapter (represented by Sponsor Dara Whipple and student Angel Wallace).

The Economic Impact Award went to Outlaw Wind Project, Ameren Missouri, represented by Ethan Piveral.

Crystal Woodring was one of the guest speakers at the Atchison County Development Corporation’s annual meeting.

The Business Expansion Awards were presented to the Tarkio Golf Club (represented by Angie Vernon) and Buttercup at the Flower Mill (represented by Betsy Chapin and Lydia Hurst).

W.C. Farmer was one of the guest speakers at the Atchison County Development Corporation’s annual meeting.

Lori Seymour, ACDC president, welcomed everyone to the annual meeting and gave a progress report on current Atchison County projects.

Atchison County Development Corporation (ACDC) held its annual meeting Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at the Tarkio Community Building. After a wonderful meal catered by Chef Paul Presents, 65 guests heard annual awards presentations, speeches by Atchison County graduates W.C. Farmer and Crystal Woodring, and an ACDC update. Award details are as follow:

NEW BUSINESS AWARDS

• All American Campground & RV Park, owned by Kim & Kevin Johnson, is located just west of the Exit 110 interchange on Highway 136.   

• Chef Paul Presents, owned by Paul Seaman, offers catering, individual meal delivery, and Ayurvedic consultations, and is based in Tarkio.

• Happy Hills Quilting, family owned and operated by Lance, Tami and Leah Lansdown, is a long arm quilting business located in Quilters Boutique in Rock Port.

• JC Auto Detailing, owned by Jordan Christian, offers interior and exterior vehicle detailing and is located Tarkio.

• Jumpstart Nutrition, owned by Jeanette and Bill Schulenberg and Thea Schulenberg, is an Herbalife business on Main Street in Rock Port offering coffees, teas, and shakes.

• Just In Time Promotions, LLC, owned by Justin Pankau, is an event promotion business based in Rock Port.

• Katie’s Jewelry Box, owned by Katie Palmer, is located on Main Street in Rock Port and specializes in Paparazzi accessories.

• Linda Kimpston Massage Therapy, owned by Linda Kimpston, is located in Tarkio.

• Northwest Missouri Land Title Company (formerly Farmers City Title, Raines Title, and John W. Raines Abstracting Company) is owned by Shelby Hayes Scheel, Adam Teale, Troy Hayes and John Teal and provides services such as title insurance, real estate contracts and estate planning. It is located on Main Street in Rock Port.

• Paigstries, owned by Paige Agnew, specializes in cinnamon rolls, macs, cupcakes, and other treats, and is based in Tarkio.   

• River Rock Lanes, a bowling alley and restaurant in Rock Port, is owned by Raechel and Mark Schoonover.

• Rock Port Oil & Tire, LLC, is owned by Jill and Jeremy Davis. Located on Main Street in Rock Port, it offers automotive maintenance, service, and tires.

• Second Amendment Firearms, LLC, owned by Seth Shulte, is a Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer located in Rock Port.

• The MVMNT Studio, owned by Kari Meyerkorth, is located on Main Street in Rock Port. Kari offers personal training, and the studio is also the home of Yoga With Tisha.

• Wilder Layne Photo is based in Rock Port. Lea Sutter, owner, is a senior picture and boudoir photographer in Rock Port.

• Wynn Dixie Glass Studio, owned by Charla Graves, offers stained glass classes and products in Fairfax.

BUSINESS EXPANSION AWARDS

• Saloon Salon: In 2015, Karli Leseberg opened The Saloon Salon in rural Watson. This past year, she relocated her salon to Tarkio. In doing so, Karli added tanning to her list of available services and positioned her business location for future growth (which will soon include a full-service nail business).

• Tarkio Golf Club: TGC completed the beautiful Mule Barn Clubhouse this year.  In addition to creating a new and improved space, this expansion also included an upgrade to a full liquor license, allowing them to serve more than just beer, and allows them to host course and private events in a climate-controlled environment. Meals can also be catered in.

• Flower Mill: Betsy Chapin has owned the Flower Mill in Tarkio for nearly 30 years. This Tarkio Main Street fixture has provided quality gifts and flowers for decades, but recently, three generations of women (and pals) decided Flower Mill needed something more.  Last November, they opened their very own drink shop called The Buttercup and have been serving all manner of beverages (and the occasional Paigstry) to happy customers ever since. In the past 10 months since they opened, they have added a county-wide delivery service, a drive-thru, and a random acts-of-kindness, pay-it-forward program.

ECONOMIC IMPACT AWARD

• The Outlaw Wind Project involves more than 77 landowners across 28,000 acres in eastern Atchison County. At completion, Outlaw will have created 14 new permanent local jobs, and on an average year, over $3 million will be directed to taxing entities, including Atchison County Road & Bridge District, Tarkio R-I School District, the Atchison County Branch Library and emergency services. During the construction phase of this 298.6MW wind farm, over 300 people will have worked on the project, utilizing local motels, rental houses, grocery stores and other local businesses. Additionally, Outlaw has contributed concrete to Tarkio Golf Course for the new clubhouse, provided a monetary donation to Tarkio Tech, and regularly participates in local fundraisers. ACDC is honored to recognize Ameren Missouri and Outlaw Wind Project as this year’s Economic Development Award recipient, for the significant economic impact of their project on Atchison County.

YOUTH BEAUTIFICATION GRANT AWARD

• Tarkio FCCLA Chapter will paint a mural on the side of the 1887 Bar & Grill restaurant on Main Street in Tarkio.

• Fairfax 6th Grade Guidance Class will paint a mural in downtown Fairfax.
