• Fairfax’s new athletic field, known as Memorial Field, dedicated to the memory of former students and boys of the community who gave their lives for the country in World War II, was dedicated Friday evening of last week. Superintendent S.W. Skelton made the dedication talk and read the names of 16 men who were either former students of the Fairfax High School or residents of the community who gave their lives in the late war.

• Names of 24 Atchison County women were drawn by the county court for service on the next petit jury. Twelve women were selcted for jurors and 12 for alternates. These women are the first ever drawn for jury service in the county, as Missouri laws had barred women from jury service until recently. The female jurors and alternates selected were Mrs. Mabel LaHue, Mrs. Deene Fischer, Mrs. Dan Martin, Mrs. Arch Campbell, Mrs. Donald Bailey, Mrs. R.R. Cunningham, Mrs. Ila Boettner, Mrs. Mildred Sizemore, Mrs. Gladys Deatz, Mrs. Mary Melvin, Mrs. Esther L. Hooper, Mrs. Chas. Currie, Mrs. Bertha Duvall, Mrs. Emma Van Stavern, Mrs. Mary McCrander, Flora Filson, Mrs. Belva Garst, Mrs. Henry Warneke, Mrs. Russell Clepfil, Mrs. Frost Browning, Mrs. Leland White, Mrs. Mary Peck, Mrs. Beulah Johnson, and Mrs. Thelma Harmes.

• Harold Gomel and Gale Seymour were crowned king and queen of the 1971 homecoming Friday evening during the halftime activities at the football game.

• Antique items of every variety drew a large crowd at the George Schoneman sale last Friday. Bidding was lively and even veteran collector Schoneman was amazed at what some of the items brought. The event was a “sell-out.”

• Candidate Edward L. Dowd spoke briefly to Kiwanians at Tuesday’s luncheon in behalf of his quest toward gaining the governorship of Missouri. Mr. Dowd also met with the Atchison County Women’s Democratic Club at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church. Candidate Dowd is a practicing attorney in St. Louis.

• The rural fire department made a run to the A.C. Hayes farm Monday. Corn stalks caught under the corn picker ignited and for a while created a hazard. The wind direction prevented the spread of flames before they were extinguished.

• In its second public appearance of the 1971 season, the Fairfax High School Marching Bulldog Band gave a stunning performance at te homecoming halftime Friday night. Spectators cheered as the band took the field to the theme from “Patton.” The homecoming theme “Love Story” was carried out by playing “What The World Needs Now Is Love” as they formed two hearts on the field. Majorettes performed a pompom routine to the tune “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.”

• Xi Lambda Beta of Beta Sigma Phi planted a Spring Snow Crab tree in the city park September 9 in memory of member Donna Portis.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “After 50 years, Superman finally married Lois Lane. That brings back memories of spending my dime on a Superman comic book on Saturday night.If I had saved them, they are collector items today. Tough!

• Sam Creed of Fairfax was named Lt. Governor of Zone of I for the 1996-97 year. Sam is a charter member of the Fairfax Optimist Club. The club was chartered in March 1980 and he served as its first president.

• The Wolverine 4-H Club spent an evening last week decorating the barrels on Main Street in very clever displays.
