October 11, 1946

• Rock Port was represented at the first of the current World Series ball games in St. Louis the first of the week by Mr. and Mrs. Bid Beck, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Watts, and Mr. and Mrs. I.J. Nickerson.

• Next Sunday, October 13th, Rock Port’s Cardinals will play a doubleheader which was scheduled for last Sunday but was rained out. Report has it that one of the New York Yankee scouts out of Kansas City will be here to look over the Cardinals, who have won 17 of 21 games this summer.

• Ralph Greer post of the American Legion is sponsoring a benefit dance at the Memorial Building Friday, October 18, with Skippy Anderson and his orchestra furnishing the music.

•Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a large barn and its contents early Saturday morning on the farm east of New Hope schoolhouse occupied by the Wm. Hartman family and owned by Eilert and Lena Rosenbohm. Three colts, one and two years old, who were tied in the barn, managed to get out of the building when their halters burned through, but were so badly injured they had to be destroyed.

• If you are a reader of the Saturday Evening Post, take a look at the Frigidaire advertisement on page 48 of the September 28th issue. The little youngster in the ad is the son of Mrs. Marion Warrick, the former Helen Wyatt. The boy is now a possessor of a social security card, as he earned $7.50 per hour for posing for the artist who took the picture for the ad and has to pay a withholding tax just the same as an adult.

October 7, 1971

• The biggest section on the new route location on U.S. 136 east of Rock Port has now been opened for traffic from Burke’s hill to just east of Route Y. The new route only needs culverts extended and fills completed, plus removal of some of the old pavement. The bridge over Rock Creek has been completed and traffic will be routed over the bridge as soon as the connecting road is completed, which will be in about 15 days.

• Dr. and Mrs. Roger Henderson entertained 110 guests at an open house held at the doctor’s office October 3. Refreshments were served and a tour of the building was conducted.

• Harry Fuelling has been appointed commissioner by the Judges of the County Court of Atchison County to sell the 16 building lots between Pleasant View rest home and city limits. There’s a value of about $2,000 on each lot.

• Missouri’s new brand law went into effect September 28. All other brand legislation was repealed, which caused the County Clerks to close their records and forward them to the Commissioner of Agriculture. The Commissioner must contact brand owners if theirs is eligible for re-registration, or if, because of duplications, a change in location of brand will be necessary.

October 3, 1996

• Atchison County firefighters gathered for training in Fairfax September 7. There were 24 firemen and four instructors, as well as two paramedics from the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District. The training consisted of classroom instruction and a fire demonstration of a 500 gallon propane tank fire.

• Skeets Body Shop is open for business. Skeet Schoonover’s new shop is on Country Club Drive.
