October 25, 1946

• The fifth and sixth grade classes at Fairfax are very proud of their new seats that were installed last Friday. They also got a new pencil sharpener in their room this fall.

• Three Fairfax boys felt pretty blue Sunday morning when they discovered their bicycles missing. The boys – Larry Cundall, Billy Powell, and Jimmie Creed – have all since found their bicycles, but Jimmie Creed’s bike was stripped of its accessories.

• Having a car just like that of a friend has its advantages and disadvantages as both Ray Smith and Jim Sloey can affirm. Their cars are Buicks of the same model and identical color. Mrs. Sloey drove their car to town and after several stops, then took it to the shop to have it washed, waxed, and some mechanical adjustments made. A little while later, Ray Smith discovered his vehicle missing. He suspected what had happened and discovered that his car was the one that had been washed and waxed at Mrs. Sloey’s expense.

• A 200-acre tract of land southeast of Fairfax was sold last week by the heirs of Minnie Robinson and Carl Oldfield. The land was part of the estate of George Oldfield, former resident, that had come into the possession of Minnie and Carl some 25 to 30 years ago.

• W.W. Dumire has purchased the apartment building known as the Bee Hive from Jimmie and H.A. Sly. Albert Kemerling has purchased the cafe building which his cafe now occupies from the Sly brothers.

October 28, 1971

• The Fairfax High School Marching Bulldogs will attend the annual Kansas University Band Day in Lawrence, Kansas, Saturday, October 30. Fairfax will be one of 81 bands participating.

• Over 40 people attended the Community Betterment meeting at Fair Haven apartments Monday evening and discussed plans for the 1972 program. A highlight of the evening’s meeting was a short program by a group of Tarkio College students and members of the Atchison County Commission. Fairfax Community Betterment agreed to sponsor the group’s appearances in Fairfax.

• K.R. Pennel received notification last week of his selection to receive the distinction of Knight Commander of the Court of Honour, a Scottish Rite body. He will be invested in the near future.

October 24, 1996

• Over the Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “To those who donated to the Bob Gaines Memorial Fund at the Christian Church, I want you to know it went toward the purchase of a new furnace there. What better use, Bob gave 30 years of his life in the heating and cooling business.”

• The Fairfax Bulldogs hosted the Craig Hornets Friday night on the local field and won 54-6, making their record 4-2 for the season. The Bulldogs travel to Mound City this week.

• At the city council closed session meeting last Wednesday night, the council hired Patricia Buckles of Mound City as its new city treasurer. In college she specialized in office work and word processing and she plans to return to college.
