• Rock Port has joined with other parts of the middle west in reporting the picking of berries in recent days due to the unusually mild fall weather. Mr. and Mrs. H. Charles Cox had strawberries and raspberries from their vines and bushes last Sunday.

• Earl Wood, former Rock Porter, who has been engaged in his work as a plumber in San Francisco since early in the recent war, told The Mail he makes $15.00 for an 8-hour day, with all overtime at double time. He works a 40-hour, five-day week normally, but gets in some overtime, which makes the check a little bigger and helps with the high cost of living.

• An old, old tavern in St. Joseph, Missouri, named the Apex Buffalo Tavern, changed hands several days ago and the owner found a copy of the Atchison County Journal published Saturday morning, December 3, 1881, while cleaning out his files. The edition has some very interesting ads and articles, including an account that Ed. Prickett had packed his gripsack and “lit out” for Kansas with a view to locating among the Jayhawkers. Thomas Fike and Nathan McNair were back from a visit to the Otoe Indian reservation and Dan Ruland and Mrs. Pollack were back from the Black Hills country. In spite of its age, the paper is well preserved and the print is as legible as the day it came off the press.

November 4, 1971

• There is a new face in the elementary office this year. Mrs. Don Hendrix is the secretary to elementary principal Mrs. Wilma Grubb. Along with the usual office routine, Mrs. Hendrix punches lunch tickets at noon and sells lunch tickets before school begins in the morning. Sewing and fishing are Mrs. Hendrix’s favorite hobbies.

• News travels quite a distance “via balloon” that is. A letter was received from Orville Muntz detailing how Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Fouman found a string of balloons in a cornfield with Orville’s address attached to it. The balloons were found near Hwy. 34 just east of Bativia, Iowa, which is at least 200 miles from Rock Port. The helium-filled balloons were released at the homecoming game in Rock Port.

• Sheriff denies rumors of resignation: “Recently, I have had several persons ask me if I was going to resign in the near future. I always enjoy hearing a good story and some of them have been pretty funny. I am under the impression that the news stories of the possible resigning of the Sheriff of Atchison County, Kansas, has brought these stories about . . . Atchison County is my home and I will continue to be loyal and serve it to the best of my ability as long as I am able.”

• A badly sooted furnace was the cause of fire at the home of Mrs. Elsie Noah, 504 S. Kansas, October 30. The soot in the furnace caught fire causing much smoke damage, but was extinguished with dry powder by the Rock Port firemen.

• Drivers tests were given in Tarkio November 2 to the following: New drivers – Genine R. Wester and Ronald Taub, Tarkio; Susan L. Norton, Fairfax; and Dennis M. Hatcher, Rock Port. William C. Lindsay of Tarkio was issued a chauffeur’s license.

• The Rock Port fourth graders, who read Charlotte’s Web in reading class, put on their own county fair. They had a pig calling contest and a contest to see who could make the best, homemade pig. They also made “pig slop” with each kid bringing a half cup of something edible.

• The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Captain Johnnie B. Hoggatt, Troop H Commanding Officer, held a town meeting October 24 in Rock Port. The meeting was a great opportunity for county residents to meet Captain Hoggatt and other members of Troop H. A total of 25 local and state officers and 35 residents were in attendance.
