November 8, 1946

• A “new era” in helicopter service was ushered in by Ray Arvene Browning, a former Tarkio youth and Tarkio College graduate. On October 29, Browning delivered to the Detroit News building in 19 minutes pictures of the Michigan-Army football game taken from the helicopter over the stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The delivery was the first picture coverage of a football game by helicopter and a new commercial use for the helicopter in the United States. It marked the beginning of a new experimental program by Greyhound Skylines, for which Browning is chief pilot and director of operations.

• A total amount of $168.24 was cleared by the junior class at the box supper held recently at the high school. The affair was opened by a short program which was followed by the auctioning of the pies, cakes, and boxes. The activities ended with a cake walk.

• A gift of books to the Tarkio Public Library was received recently from Mrs. Gladys Stevenson as a memorial to the late George Stevenson. The books include “Plastics” by Wolfe, “The Story of Surgery” by Graham, “Out of the Midwest” by Frederick, “Darkness at Noon” by Koestler, and “Pleasant Valley” by Bromfield.

November 11, 1971

• Dr. A. Howard Bell, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychology, Tarkio College, and Thomas L. Stickel, 1971 TC graduate and a psychology major, were the joint authors of an article published in the Rehabilitation Research and Practice Review, a quarterly journal. The article was titled “Denial and Independence of Institutionalized Clients as Measured by the Bell Disability Scale.”

• Extensive damage was done to Atchison County Sheriff Paul Seymour’s 1972 Ford sedan patrol car in an accident November 4. Seymour was traveling west on Maple Street and Donald G. Schwenn was northbound on 9th Street in a 1962 panel truck owned by Davis Furniture when the two collided. Both were headed to an accident which had just happened three blocks away.

• The Tarkio High School senior class will present “The Male Animal” November 16 and 18. The delightful comedy will appear at the THS Auditorium.

• The women of the household are dressing dolls in the First National Bank Dress-a-Doll contest. The men will participate in a pheasant contest with the winner being the hunter who brings in the longest tail feather from a pheasant he shoots this season.

November 7, 1996

• Over 130 children through adults participated in the Mercantile Bank Halloween Parade.

• The ninth annual Business and Professional Women’s Craft Show was held Sunday, November 3, at the Community Building in Tarkio. Over 250 people attended the show which included craft booths from Tarkio, Fairfax, Maryville, Westboro, Mound City, Rock Port, and Clarinda.

• John and Allen Wennihan of Tarkio received an interest rebate from the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Market Development Division, for their participation in the Crop and Livestock Loan Program.
