December 13, 1946

• At The Tarkio [movie theatre]: Fast Company in Old Sacramento, Anne of Green Gables, Isle of The Dead, Claudia and David, and Abilene Town.

• Allen-Schiffern Post No. 199 of the American Legion has leased from the City of Tarkio for 99 years several lots of the old city park, the lots which are known as the old Chautauqua grounds. The Legionnaires plan to immediately construct a club building there for the use of veterans of World War II.

• Today the Rev. M. Stephen James, D.D., of Brunswick, New Jersey, will bring to an end a week of religious emphasis at Tarkio College and a series of inspiring addresses on the general theme, “The Deeper Levels of Living for the Higher Reaches of the Soul.”

• Pupils of the Clover Hill school will present their Christmas program December 19 at the schoolhouse. There are 23 pupils enrolled at the school this year and there has been an average daily attendance of 21 for every month this term.

December 16, 1971

• The winners of the 1971 4-H awards that are given for meritorious service to 4-H are Harry Broermann and Earl Campbell. Harry has been a 4-H leader for 33 years and has been with 4-H since his 10th birthday. Earl is the custodian at Tarkio Elementary and has prepared the school for 4-H Achievement Days for the past several years and always helps with mechanical and physical equipment problems.

• Students of Tarkio High School will present a Christmas assembly December 23 in the high school auditorium. “Yet Men Dream” is the title of the pageant that involves unique narration, Christmas carols, and traditional tableaux.

December 12, 1996

• A U.S.O Show, paying tribute to the men and women who served our country during World War II, was held in Tarkio to packed houses Saturday and Sunday. Many locals performed in the production, which was a huge hit!

• Something similar to “the changing of the guard” took place at Tarkio Academy December 10. Rob Dowis took over the reins as the new Executive Director at Tarkio Academy, replacing Paul Cade.

• The elves are back in Tarkio for their annual elf commercials and live television auction. On Saturday, December 14, the elf commercials will air on Atchison County Cable Channel 13. The live Elf Auction will begin immediately after the commercials and will be filmed from the Walnut Inn in Tarkio. There is a huge assortment of items on which to place bids.

• Opinions by editor Will Johnson: “Tarkio Police Chief Mick McAdams was run over by another one of Tarkio’s finest, Chris Martin, at the beginning of the Christmas parade on Saturday. Chris was apparently positioning his motorcycle for the trip down Main Street when he looked up and ran over our illustrious Police Chief. Mick took it in stride…and warned Chris he’d be on duty while the elves were out filming those commercials…”
