December 20, 1946
• Mrs. Newlon has received word from her daughter, Ida Beth, that the latter intended leaving Linz, Austria, on December 10 on the first lap of her journey to the United States. Miss Newlon is a worker in the Red Cross entertainment field.
• The secretarial class is beginning work on a yearbook for the high school. This is the first time in several years that such a book has been produced by Rock Port High School students.
• No wonder the mail is congested at holiday time! The force at the Rock Port Post Office reports that 10,150 greeting cards were dispatched from the office on Tuesday, with an equal number on Monday and the same quantity on Wednesday. Multiply this by several thousand post offices throughout the country and the total is many, many millions.
December 16, 1971
• The judges of the county court paid $4,000 for welfare patients at the Pleasant View Rest Home. The welfare checks received by the county residents do not cover the complete cost of their share of the operation of the rest home, which was $5,000 in the red before the county payment.
• Mrs. Curtis Vogler, a member of the Chordstaters barbershop quartet that had been selected to tour Vietnam this Christmas with the USO show, reported that the trip had been cancelled. The reason for the cancellation is the increased troop pull-out from that area.
• Naval Aviation Officer Candidate Charles E. Martin has completed his first solo flight in a Naval aircraft at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. His solo flight marked the end of five months of intensive flight training.
• Charley Hall will be turning 97 and Thad Kerr will be 98, both on December 16. Charley was born in the Linden community and has spent his entire life in the Rock Port community. He states he is the oldest and longest subscriber to The Mail. Thad was born in Rogerville, Indiana, and came to this community from there.
December 12, 1996
• Boy Scout Troop 402 was reopened with the help of the American Legion, Rev. Ralph Clark, John Campbell, and many parents. The troop consists of five boys: Patrol Leader David Vette, Scribe Matt Raya, Historian Aryon Viets, and Quarter Masters Chris Davis and Jonathan Rosenbohm. Scout Master is Chris Crowley and the two assistant Scout Masters are Bryan Davis and Bill Shirley.
• Scott Melvin pinned Lew Hunter with a 50 year pin for his 50 years of membership with the North Star Masonic Lodge.
• A new Director of Nursing has been appointed at Community Hospital in Fairfax. Rhonda Evans, RN, has accepted the position and began her new duties December 2, relinquishing her day supervisory position at the hospital.
• Dollar Plus Store has opened in Rock Port. Bob Witt and Ron Jordening, owners of Breadeaux Pizza, saw a need when the Place’s Store moved and decided to make an effort to meet part of the need. The store will be managed by Arnelle Lansdown and Linda Lansdown will also be working there.
• Winners of the Dickens Christmas Costume Contest were: Tiny Tim or small child – Keenan Bash, Seth Showalter, and Molly Carpenter; Scrooge – Dr. Wallace Carpenter; and Best Dickens Character – Dan Stanton.
