December 27, 1946

• Mrs. Martha B. Carson, 78 years, 9 months, and 11 days, died at the home of her daughter in Tarkio Wednesday, December 18. Martha Belvins Carson, daughter of Vardman and Martha Belvins, was born March 7, 1868, in the Irish Grove community near Fairfax. She was of a family of 11 children. Her parents were pioneers of Atchison County and Mrs. Carson spent her entire life in the county. She married William H. Carson in 1885 and they had 11 children. She is survived by nine children, 45 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

• Schoolers’ Grocery, for almost 45 years a well-known Fairfax business, has been sold by Harvey H. Schooler to Phil Hopkins. Harvey will retire and his son, Marvin, will soon open a new furniture store in Fairfax.

• Mrs. Moran Wright and Mrs. Earle E. Sims entertained the members of the Wednesday Evening Contract Club at a dinner Thursday evening of last week at the home of the latter. After dinner, Christmas gifts were exchanged.

December 30, 1971

• Through their recently initiated Exchange Maintenance Service Index Plan, the United Telephone Company says, “We have had many reports of trouble or telephones out of order reported by well-meaning people who interpret their friends excessively long busy signal to be a service interruption. Upon investigation, the trouble results in nothing more than someone wishing to take an undisturbed nap.”

• A 14-year-old Kansas boy and a 23-year-old Corning, Missouri, man were injured when the vehicle they were in hit a parked car with no lights on sitting on a county road 1 1/2 miles northeast of Corning. The driver of the parked car had parked the vehicle on the road and left it to pick corn.

• Santa letters from some of Fairfax’s youth: “…I want a T.V., radio, swimming pool, and a hot tub. I would also like a tree house if you have enough room in your sled. If you don’t have enough room, maybe your reindeers could carry it on their backs…Love, Chase Ilsley.” “…I want a toy zoo. I would like zebras, lions, tigers, monkeys and bears in my zoo. Please bring a ring and necklace for my mom. Thank you! Love, Whitney Harrington.”

• The grand prize winner of the Christmas in the Park decoration contest is the Wolverine 4-H Club.

• Did you know? “Butter has up to 24 grams of fat in a two tablespoon serving; margarine 23 grams; mayonnaise 22 grams.” “According to a recent survey conducted by Holiday Inn Express, more than 70 percent of business travelers eat breakfast when they travel, though only 47 percent do at home.”

• Fairfax Chapter No. 373 Order of Eastern Star installed officers Thursday night. They were: Sharron Brown, worthy matron; John Howell, worthy patron; Liz Jones, associate matron; K.R. Pennel, associate patron; Donna Howell, conductress; Mary Anne Pennel, associate conductress; Adah Pyeatt, secretary; Norma Bradfield, treasurer; Virginia Swan, chaplain; Nancy Gaines, marshal; Lila Faulkner, Ruth; Iva Lou Hall, warden; and Gene Bradfield, sentinel.
