February 7, 1947

• The local VFW basketball team will play the Harlem Globe Trotters at Brown Gymnasium.

• Coe and Son Aviation Corporation recently purchased four new Cessna trainers to be used by students enrolled in the Veterans’ Flight Training program at the local airport. These all-metal planes have an average cruising speed of more than 100 miles per hour. In addition to their use in the training program, they will also be for rent and sale. Bob Graf stated that the corporation also has a new Navion ship and a new Sea-Bee amphibious plane.

• The Foster White building on Main Street in Tarkio just west of the Martin Auto Store has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huber. Mr. Huber is the proprietor of the Huber Brothers Welding Shop in Tarkio.

February 10, 1972

• Twenty Tarkio College students recently completed a course entitled “Rehabilitation Practicum” at the Rehabilitation Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The students also took side trips to the state hospitals in Benton and Little Rock, the Girls Training School in Alexander, Arkansas Enterprises for the Blind in Little Rock and The Cerebral Palsy Center in Little Rock. Each student also took a thermal bath in the luxurious bath houses that line Bath House Row in Hot Springs.

• Max Van Hoozer was named Tarkio Citizen of the Year. Max has been a teacher in the public school system for seven years and an additional seven years at Tarkio College. He was responsible for the organization of the Atchison County Livestock Show, is on numerous church and community boards, and was recognized by the University of Missouri as Outstanding Alumni in 1970.

• Mrs. Dona Gray was named Tarkio Employee of the Year. Mrs. Gray has been employed at the same business for 28 1/2 years and has been a member of the Business and Professional Women since 1947. She has also served on many committees and no doubt has taken more stitches for people in Tarkio than anyone else.

• This week’s featured C.O.E. student is Miss Judy Rail who is employed at the L & M Maytag Store and Laundry, owned and operated by Lynn and Margaret Graybill. Judy works in both the laundry and the retail appliance and clothing store.

February 6, 1997

• Charles E. Jones of Tarkio, a mail carrier, was recognized February 3 for 30 years of service to the United States Postal Service. Jones was presented a Service Award Pin.

• The recently formed Tarkio High School Wrestling Dance Team has been selected to perform during the upcoming Missouri State Wrestling Tournament. Tarkio dancers include Nicole Vette, Heidi Champlin, Jennifer Hall, Tralaine Umbarger, Diana Koeberl, Jayme Vaught, and Amanda Salmond.

• The Walnut Inn Restaurant in Tarkio will be reopening under new management February 7. The Walnut Inn is leased by General Entrepreneurs of Tarkio Academy from the Mule Barn Theatre Guild. Stephanie McIntosh will be the restaurant supervisor and LaVerna Greenley (Mrs. G) will be the kitchen supervisor/trainer. Mrs. G will supervise the Tarkio Academy Generals in the kitchen and offer a revised menu that will include trendy diet meals and the always popular “meat and potatoes” meals.

• Brock Nuckolls was crowned Tarkio High School Basketball Homecoming King and Heather Currie was crowned Queen.
