February 7, 1947
• The progress committee of the Community Club has plans for the inauguration of a garbage collection service for the residences and businesses of Rock Port. The present plan is to make collections twice a week, completed by Ernest King. King has agreed to make such collections for residences for $1 per month for garbage only or $1.50 a month for garbage and trash.
• March 1st will see a change in business by three Rock Port firms – the Squire Ice Cream Co., Greenley’s Wholesale Co., and Bob Underwood’s recreation parlor. Greenley’s will take over the location of the Squire firm in the big Luhrs building. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Simon are buying the Squire equipment which they will move to the Underwood recreation location, and Underwood will move his equipment to the adjoining building, which he also owns. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sutter, Jr., who have been with Squire ever since that firm established an ice cream and cream-buying business in Rock Port will continue with Mr. and Mrs. Simon in charge at the new location.
• Mr. and Mrs. Olin Slemp of Rock Port have purchased the Snow White Cafe of Harold Barnes and took possession Monday morning.
February 4, 1972
• A 200 acre farm owned by Bud Martin, Jack Martin, and Mrs. Marjorie Barnhart, Watson, sold at auction January 25 for $451 per acre for a total of $90,200. The land was originally in the Bill Morgan estate located 5 1/2 miles east of Hamburg in Iowa.
• An extensive remodeling program will begin Saturday night at Greenley’s Market in Rock Port when 136 feet of new shelving, freezers, and racks are installed, plus a new floor and other significant changes.
• Excitement ran high as 30 pair of sparkling eyes belonging to Cub Scouts of Pack 59 watched their wooden cars race down the track in the annual pinewood derby. Winners were: 1st, Gary Soske; 2nd, Todd Pencook; third, Jeff Hackney; and 4th, Tommy Pester.

• Mercer’s Rock Port True Value Hardware is getting closer to becoming a reality. The work on the building is progressing nicely. The Mercers are Jennie and Gene Mercer and Mark and Christina Mercer. The Mercers have run their True Value Hardware in Nebraska City for 27 plus years and in 1984 branched out to Syracuse. Mark is the operations manager for all three stores and Gene is the CEO. The Rock Port facility will be managed by Jerry LeFever.
• A benefit to lend a helping hand to Chad Rogers and family was held January 25. The community came through in a big way! Chad suffered a compound fracture to his left leg during football practice November 26. The bone jammed into the ground which complicated matters. He has undergone six surgeries and could be facing a few more.
• Chats – “The AC Mail has a first this week. The pictures of the Chad Rogers benefit were produced from a digital camera via the computer. The changes in the newspaper industry over the past 50 years are amazing to us old hot metal printers.”
• Graduation ceremonies were held January 24 at Vance Air Force Base, Enid, Oklahoma, for Captain James Todd Scamman, son of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Scamman of Rock Port. Scamman’s next assignment will be with the 355 fighter squadron, Davis-Alonthan AFB Tuscon, Arizona, flying the A-10 fighter jet. Capt. Scamman received the T-38 class Flight Commander’s Award of Excellence.
