President of ALA Unit 199

The Allen Schiffern American Legion Auxiliary Unit 199 held an informal meeting on February 14, 2022, with four members and one guest attending. Chaplain Pearl Burns said an opening prayer. Two more members joined the meeting. 

Recording Secretary/First Vice Barb Hines read the minutes of the last meeting. After a few corrections, the minutes were approved. The treasurer’s financial report was given by Secretary/Treasurer Sheridan Mires. Following a discussion, the report was approved. Membership was discussed. We have several members that need to pay their dues for this year. See or send your renewals to Barb Hines. 

The turkey dinner report was given. Once again, it was a successful event. Thanks to all that joined us for a great meal! An update on the McIntosh sale was given with a shout out to Scott Morehouse for all his help.

There will be a District meeting on March 5 at Parnell Unit 528. Let Linda Kaye or Sheridan know if you are going or if you need a ride. 

We have decided to have the spring rummage sale. We have set the sale date for Friday, April 22, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 23, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We will be taking donations in April 14, 15, 18, 19, and 20, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. No donations will be accepted on April 21 to allow members time to finish unpacking and organizing. Due to the shorter take-in time, please bring your donations early!

Due to COVID-19, we were unable to volunteer in person for the Christmas gift shops of Cameron and Eisenhower, but our VA representatives purchased (from units’ donations) and gathered requested donated items that were delivered.

We are waiting for a confirmation from the schools on a date to have the Atchison County Government Day. We are planning to have it at the courthouse instead of a video presentation.

No Tarkio High School junior girls have signed up to attend Girls State this year. If you know of a girl who would want to participate in this program, please ask her to sign up.

Sheridan read a thank you from C.A.R.E. for our donation. The card was given to Historian Donna Payne for our scrapbook. Donna had brought one of the finished scrapbooks to share at the meeting.

Members are to give their tallied money spent, volunteer hours and the number assisted for veterans, families, education activities, community services, Girls State, children and youth, poppies, and the miles driven to Linda Kaye by March 1.

We all enjoyed a Valentine sweet treat following a closing prayer from Chaplain Pearl. The next meeting will be March 14, 2022, at 5:30 p.m.
