• Participating in the events of the annual Speech and Music Festival held at Tarkio College today will be 450 students from 50 high schools in Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. All events, with the exception of the one-act plays, will be held in David Rankin Hall. The plays will be given at the high school auditorium.
• Charles Landis of Mound City, Missouri, has purchased the former Don Harvey property on South Tenth Street from Mr. O’Bannon of Rolfe, Iowa.
• Several articles mysteriously disappeared recently from Tarkio stores. Bob Martin of the Tarkio Electric Company stated an electric razor was shoplifted from his store two weeks ago and then another a week later. He also stated that he understood that another merchant had lost several articles of clothing from that store as well.
• B. F. King is the new owner and operator of the local second-hand store, having purchased the business from Dallas Carlisle. Mr. and Mrs. King are living east of Tarkio on the farm purchased by Mrs. King’s father, Ira Smith, from H. K. Noel.
• The residence of Mrs. Albert Meek on North Seventh Street was sold this week to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Scribner. Mr. Scribner is employed by S. J. Peterson as a carpenter and Mrs. Scribner is employed at the Atchison County Telephone Company as an operator. Mrs. George Cradit sold her home on Broad Street to Mr. and Mrs. James Templeton.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Carter purchased controlling interest in Curfman Hardware, Inc. February 23rd from Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Curfman. Ivan has been associated with the business for over 11 years.
• Mrs. Mason Houghton, 4-H Club Leader of the York 4-H Club, is in Washington, D.C. attending the National 4-H Leader’s Forum. Mrs. Houghton, a club leader for 20 years, plans to also tour such places as Gettysburg, Mount Vernon, Capitol Hill, and the Washington, D.C. monuments.
• Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hanrath of Westboro, Missouri, observed their 65th Wedding Anniversary March 14th. Born within six weeks of each other in 1886, they have lived their entire lives in the St. John’s and Westboro areas.
• Dr. Larry Pattee of Tarkio College presented a new tennis net to the city to use at the city’s tennis court. Accepting the net on the city’s behalf was Alderman Dr. Roy McIntosh.
• This week’s featured C.O.E. student is Todd Staples. He is employed at the Tarkio Avalanche and is receiving training in job printing, presswork, building and dismantling forms, press maintenance, plate casting and engraving. He is also a reporter for high school basketball games.

• Karen Clark received an Employee of the Year Award at the Tarkio Community Betterment Awards Banquet Monday, March 10. The award was presented by Lyllis Vette.
• John Whittington of Tarkio, employee for St. Joseph Light and Power, put up Tarkio’s newest banners. The “Welcome to Tarkio” banners, designed by Cathy Carter of Tarkio, were put up on the poles lining Main Street.
• The Tarkio Place’s Store has surpassed all expectations of what was projected, according to Jonathon Miller, Marketing Manager for P.M. Place Stores Company.
