March 21, 1947

• H.L. Martin of Watson was in The Mail office to discontinue the subscription of his son, Harold D. Martin, because he is to be coming home from Manila, Philippine Islands, where he’s been stationed with the army since last August.

• The city park bridge, which has been in an unsafe condition for some time because of broken planking in the floor, is being repaired by the county court. A large amount of heavy flooring was delivered at the bridge last week and will be put in as quickly as possible.

• Rock Port friends of Fred Rosenthal, now living in Liberty, Missouri, will be interested in knowing that Mr. Rosenthal was operated upon at the veterans’ hospital in Wadsworth, Kansas, for the removal of shrapnel fragments in his leg. Mr. Rosenthal sustained his wounds in France while his division was moving toward Berlin. He has suffered considerably from his wounds.

• Absalom Warren, who started blacksmithing in 1882 and continued that strenuous activity for almost 60 years, passed away at a Maryville hospital Friday, March 14, aged 83 years, seven months, and 11 days. He and his family have lived in Rock Port for 40 years, most of that time in Rock Port. It has only been a few years since Mr. Warren quit blacksmithing.

• Mr. and Mrs. Albert Walter, who have occupied one of the Bank of Atchison County apartments since they retired from the farm, have purchased the Meadows property on Water Street. This property is one of the more desirable pieces in Rock Port.

March 16, 1972

• Three teacher resignations were officially accepted at the Rock Port R-2 Board of Education meeting. Resignations of Mrs. Frank (Dale) Howell, Mrs. R.C. (Gladys) Martin and Mrs. Clint (Phyllis) Reeves were accepted by the board. Charlie Shaw’s resignation had already come before the board and been accepted previously.

• Mr. and Mrs. Don Lininger will celebrate 20 years in business as the Rock Port Plumbing Company Saturday, March 18, with an open house at 400 South Main in Rock Port.

• It’s hoe-down time in Rock Port Friday night as the senior class presents the play “January Thaw.” A cast of 30, plus nine children from the community will make this a memorable evening for all.

• Mrs. Minnie Templeton, who will be 99 years old in May, received her 50-year Eastern Star pin March 12. Mrs. Templeton was initiated into the Rock Port Chapter March 7, 1922.

March 13, 1997

• After 30 years of dedicated service Bob Fay has stepped down from the Rock Port Telephone Company’s Board of Directors. Bob was recognized at a dinner held in his honor last Friday evening. Bob was on the old board of the Rock Port Mutual Telephone Co. when it first voted to cut over to dial and is the only member of the original Mutual Board still on today. On May 11, 1965, the Rock Port Telephone Company was incorporated and Bob was elected secretary of the board at that time, a job he has kept to this day.

• In spite of a Wednesday evening snowstorm that forced nine schools to cancel, some 330 students from 10 high schools in Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri competed in the 24th annual High School Business Contest at Peru State College Thursday, February 27. Rock Port students Eddie Bolin and Kandi Herron came home with awards.
